Former Gunner claims Wenger is scared to spend ‘big money’

|

Arsene WengerFormer Gunner Stewart Robson reckons Arsene Wenger is scared to spend ‘big money’ this summer because the Frenchman will be held accountable if his potential signings flop.

The Gunners have lost several top players over the past few seasons, like Robin van Persie, Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, and have failed to replace them. And Robson believes now is the time for Wenger to splash the cash if Arsenal are to stand any chance of winning the Premier League title next season.

Quoted on talkSPORT.com, Robson said:

‘If Arsene Wenger goes out and spends big money, say he buys three big players, then he is then culpable when they don’t succeed.

‘All the time that he is selling players and not spending big, when they come fourth, everyone says ‘Arsenal are doing OK because they are not spending what the other clubs spend’.

‘As soon as he spends big money Arsenal fans and everyone in the media will expect them to compete for the Premier League and the Champions League.

‘If he doesn’t do that then he puts himself under pressure and that’s why he doesn’t spend. There’s been money there for years.

‘They’ve got a chance [to win the Premier League] but they’ve got to spend some money wisely.’

To be fair, I think Robson has a point here. I too believe Wenger doesn’t spend big, only because the Frenchman is worried about the arrivals flopping.

However, it has come to the point where Arsenal must spend big, not necessarily massively, but big in order to keep up with the likes of Manchester United, City and Chelsea, as they will no doubt reinforce their squads this summer.

We have got a substantial amount of cash to spend this summer and with some of the top teams in the league under new management, next season could well see us challenge for the title, if Wenger takes a gamble and makes some big moves in the upcoming months.

I think the way they finished this season and with 3 or 4 good players coming in Arsenal will be a top team next season and with all the good young players they have now it could be a good few years to enjoy.

All arsenal really need is maybe 3 or 4 top players and I think if they brought them in this season we would be close to the top. so lets say if wenger got a centre back, DM a creative midfielder and a top class striker then arsenal will be close next season. but that is really unlikely to happen with Arsene wenger. the only reason that makes me think that things could be different this time round is the fact that he only has one season left, and if he doesn’t win anything or make big strides forward next season then he wont get a new contract im sure of that

I do not agree with Robson, who loves having a go at Wenger. It is true he does not wish to spend big, and to waste money. However Wenger now has invest substantialy if we are to win major trophies
He is not scared to invest ! Like most Mansgers he has bought some great and some very poor players. In recent times his record is poor. Therefore he cannot take any risk and has to spend on established stars, he has to pay more.

Of course he is scared to spend. Because he is a very responsible with the club’s money and because he has messed up on so many transfers in the past.

  • dagashini says:

so so scared to spend……that’s the bitter truth

Robson is a Wanker and not worth listening to…

  • silentstan says:

aah Stewert Robson, the embittered small minded average ex player who was sacked from Arsenal TV. yea, like i would listen to what he says

    • Chris says:

Well you should listen. He was got rid of because he said it truly. Others have kept their jobs at Arsenal by toeing the Wenger line without question! Why do you imagine Pat Rice was a long term Yes man ? He had to be. Why do you think Adams, Keown, Petit – and without doubt others – have not fancied working under Wenger. And how healthy do you think that has been / is / and will be ???

      • He hasn’t “said it truly”. He’s just embittered and poisonous. Like the poster said, a very average ex-player. Keown is a Wenger supporter. Have Petit and Adams been offered jobs which they’ve turned down?

Why dont people like you go and support another team? Its people like you that go to the Emirates and crrate a NEGATIVE atmosphere with the pathetic booing of your own players and the constant whinging through out the games. As for Robson, this bitter cynical idiot, should not be allowed back into the Emirates, he’s a turn coat/traitor.

  • Millzpo says:

Another mindless comment from the bitter Stuart Robson. Why doesn’t this guy crawl back under the rock he came from. No way would AW be frugal just to keep his job. He’s still so bitter after what happened to him on Arsenal.com, it’s about time he left it alone and moved on. Muppet!

Sometimes you become surprised when those you rated very high performed below expectation. Robson goofed totally by saying Wenger is afraid to spend big. Who brought in names like Vierra, Henry, Lehmanns, Robert Pires, Gilberto etc? Wenger only adapted himself to the era of less to spend. Even with little cash he brought in the likes of Fabregas, Nazri, Clichy, kolo Toure, RVP & co. who are making waves in their respective teams. Please Mr Robson, if you have nothing to say keep quiet so as not to reveal your intellectual defiency and poor grasp of history.

    • Chris says:

He didn’t spend much money buying in any of those you mention. Don’t you understand …. such bargains are seldom available any more. His reputation in house is that he agonises at length over decisions and if he makes one will NOT change his mind. Meanwhile you omit his buys which were a waste of time or money. How long have you got ??

      • panther says:

Wenger has spent money but not the 25/30 million pound players. Wenger and Arsenal couldn’t afford to spend that type of money whilste paying off the stadium debt. Every one knows this so Reason is talking bullshit as per usual.

      • pistolpete says:

Every manager buy’s wrong at some point and i think Wenger is the best man to sort this out, it will not need a lot of changes as the teams is building nicely.
