Roma goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg is wanted by Arsenal, according to reports in Italy.
The 30-year-old Dutchman was linked with a move to The Emirates in 2011, with the shot-stopper quoted by the Italian press as saying he would join The Gunners if they tabled an offer. As such, this never occurred and he evidently signed for Roma from Ajax.
Gazzetta dello Sport now claim the Giallorossi have told the Holland international that he can find himself a new club during January and has been offered to Arsenal for a cut-price of £3.5 million, with a deal said to be done in the next few days.
With wanting to preserve his status of being Holland’s no.1, Stekelenburg, whose contract doesn’t expire until to 2015, is said to be open to a move away from Roma.
The only problem which could prevent this move from transpiring is that the Dutchman wouldn’t be guaranteed to be Arsenal’s no.1. Wojciech Szczesny is highly-rated by Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal faithful. However, the Pole could do with some competition for his place in the line-up.
A goalkeeper, I believe, is required this January, one that can challenge Szcz, and Stekelenburg would be an ideal candidate for the job.
If he is in fact being offered to us for just £3.5 million, as Italian reports suggest, then Wenger should seriously consider it.
