Is this man slowly proving his critics right?

|

After squandering another glorious chance to bag at least a point at The Emirates yesterday afternoon against Chelsea, is it fair to label Olivier Giroud a flop?

The 25-year-old striker has failed to convert in front of goal in six Premier League games, but could/should have had at least three to his name already this season.

His missed opportunities have cost The Gunners a few valuable points, leaving several fans, and pundits alike, questioning Arsene Wenger’s decision to sign the France international from Montpellier over the summer.

After his last-minute miss against Chelsea yesterday afternoon, Wenger was left wondering how the French striker failed to hit the back of the net:

‘[Giroud] was in a good position. Why did he not score? I don’t know.

Asked whether or not Giroud should’ve scored, Wenger replied:

‘I felt [he should have scored], yes.’

Clearly the pressure to get off the mark in the league has got to Giroud, and his inability to find the net is somewhat rightly receiving criticism.

I for one like the player – his off the ball movement, aerial ability and hold-up play is great. But as a striker you are judged on how many goals you score, that’s it.

I do believe Giroud will come good – it’s only been six league games. I think he has adapted well to the English game but looks to have left his shooting boots back in France.

He needs to finish off the chances he receives or creates and find his shooting boots ASAP. If he fails to do this or continues his poor run in front of goal then he could very rapidly find himself in Marouane Chamakh’s position, on the bench and not even talked about.

It’s unfair to expect Giroud to replace RVP – but there are strikers out there in the English game with experience who would have been a better option to buy. Ba for example – is one of them – Dempsey would also have made a good addition to our scoring options. Wenger has this arrangement though with Greimandi to buy French players and the lumbering Giroud is another addition to the list of flops that this pact has provided us with. I don’t rate Kos either – Wenger should have signed Cahill – Kos he’s another ex-French league player like Giroud who had only played one season at top level in France befor Arsene ‘snapped him up – France is no longer the football powerhouse of Europe – but Wenger still keeps on buying players from there . He admits to also having tried to sign Hazard -I thought he was the worst Chelsea player yesterday – and will struggle to reproduce his heroics in the French league in the English one.

Wow you don’t have a clue do you? Are you seriously saying that Koscielny isn’t very good? The same Koscielny who could quite easily have picked up Arsenals player of the season for last seasons performances? RVP won it but Kozzer was absoloutly brilliant last season. Better than TV5. Giroud is/will be a quality player for us. It takes time to bed in especially when you move to a foreign league and have to get used to a completly new set of team mates. It took Henry about 6 months to bed in properly and it wouldn’t surprise me if YOU were one of the fans questioning why Wenger had bothered to buy this French flop winger from Juventus and look how that turned out. As much as Giroud is being blamed for not putting away his chances the rest of the team have to be asked questions of as well as to why they aren’t playing to Girouds strengths as he’s great in the air (but we don’t put many arial crosses into the box for him) and we lump the ball up to him to hold it up and then don’t follow it up by giving him an outlet and supporting him. I’m as frustrated as the next fan when he doesn’t bury his chances but I’m also a realistic person that understands that we aren’t playing PES and he won’t just slot in and hit the ground running.

Shut up you fool – if you think that Koscieny was our player of the season based on a few good performances in home games against average sides – then you are the one who doesn’t have a clue. Best to forget his away shows at Blackburn ,Anfield, Milan ,etc ,when he was exposed as being very ordinary and out of his league – he came up short yesterday at home when showing the same failings that he had in away games.

        • 49Unbeaten says:

First full game of the season! He’s a quality defender but I will say that either he or TV5 should partner Per and not each other. You probably thought Ramsey was outstanding last year as well seeing as though you see the opposite to everyone else.

      • jeff wright says:

Unbeaten what you are admitting here son is that Kos is not good enough to start ahead of Mertesacker – Wenger will not drop Verm after making him captain – so Kos is just a third choice center back – and Cahill in my view would have been a better buy than him – considering how much – the more limited than Cahill the ex-French league guy kost.

U Prick..;Terry slipped against Arsenal and gifted Van Persie that goal last season…do you think Terry is a flop. Add some sense to your talks and cut slack on you nonsense. Even EPL pundits were praising Koscielny’s last season performance….I didn’t know you were a seasoned professional footballer and much more experienced than these folks :P:P

Christ on a bicycle; what a load of 5hit this article is. Did Bergkamp and Henry bag double hat-2ricks on their debuts? Did they fook. Give the lad time, FFS. @ jeff wright, the Boss should have signed cahill? My God, man, Kos has one 5hit game and you’re already eyeing up the pimp’s prostitutes enviously. Seriously, what do you know about football? All can see that Kos is twice the player cahill is. We were poor yesterday, certainly; chavski were nowt special and managed to fluke their winner – Arsenal scored two goals yesterday, one of which was the scum’s winner. Don’t fall for the confidence trick that the scum played better than us; their success is bought and never forget that.

    • jeff wright says:

You’re having a laugh minnicabbie comparing Bergkamp and Henry – players who had aleady won top honors before joining us – with Giroud – who has spent most of his career – he’s no kid – with lower French league sides. He’s probably a world beater in France – or just had one good season there. It was a crazy decision though to sign him when proven strikers in our league are out there who could have been signed instead. Wenger’s already reluctant to start Giroud -despite thew obvious fact that we need a big front player.

    • James says:

Berk. Don”t even mention Giroud and Bergkamp in the same breath. Even Henry had class when he arrived. Giroud wasn’t even playing League 1 France two years ago. It’s just Wenger being a prick again. Spunking £13m on some French lightweight. Prat.

  • antarchile says:

In my opinion Koscielny is not good enough for Arsenal..
Anybody saw Cesc theatrics to get Medel sent of at Sevilla?..What a disgrace…The Spanish and Italian leagues are so much about deceiving , time wasting and plainly cheating..Those leagues are horrible to watch..the premierleague is fantastic..

  • Goonermac says:

I agree with Jeff Wright, Wenger has this thing about French players. Henry was a long time ago.
Giroud 15m euros. Never. Dempsey half that price, what about the lad Mirales at Everton. Didn,t we have a chance to get him. Diaby (sicknote) £55k per week and every Saturday off. A liability !!
For a club so “careful” with money, we don’t arf waste a lot !!

    • chris from Cambridge says:

I am beginning to tire of saying … ” let’s give Giroud time.” He has cost us points in 3 games already … by not doing what he is paid for – which is hitting the target from not far out. We certainly look to buy too many very ordinary players from the (very ordinary) French League. Proven EPL players are not cheap but there is a reason. Look who we could have bought : Parker, Cahill, Enrique, Dempsey … and that is only in the last 12/18 months. Why does AW rate French players so highly ? Too often they don’t have bottle … like (say) Squillaci … and like Giroud in front of goal, it would seem.

  • the_Gunt says:

Giroud is quality ..so what he hasn’t scored u can see his still nervous give him sometime ..I rather have a striker that creates chances and gets into the right spaces instead of a finisher like defoe who pitches up once every 5 games

  • banner says:

jeff, dnt be a prick cuz Wenger dint sign sign ur couzin. Wenger bought a German and a Spaniard too, you dnt seem to have a problem with that, huh? Fyi, Kosher WAS DEFINITELY our player of the season last year-hands down. ask around. You need to deal with your problem wit french players. i would suggest you wait for wenger to retire, then you can take his job, maybe sign a 23 man English squad, and maybe Howard Webb whle ur at it.

    • jeff wright says:

thanks for the advice banner but can you put it in English please so i can understand what you are going on about.
I neversaid that Wenger only signed French players anyway you dumb-ass – he does sign rather a lot of them though who are not as good as some other foreign ones who already have proven experience in English football.
Also dumb-dumb RVP was our besT player last season – that’s why he was voted PFP of the season and also by the media – and he wonb the golden boot you thick cunt. Szcenesny was easily the second best – he ‘s not progressed though since then – and judging by yesterdays horror show neither has Kosser – he looked like a Championship player up against Torres .I’ll bet he is left out against the Greeks.

    • Adam says:

banner u is stupid if you think kosser was our best player last season.

      • FaithfulGooner says:

My my…one bad game and u all are starting to get into Kos’s head….I am sure u losers would have kissed his imaginary boots when he scored the goal in the last game against City. There are certain bunch of Arsenal fans like u cunts who are so unfaithful, one day u praise a man ….next day u forget all the good he has done for the club. I wonder if he hasn’t stepped up last season then even Van Persie’s goals cud not have saved Arsenal from missing out on the Chamions Leage qualification. Show some respect cunts. The problem was clearly not with him but Wenger’s team slection against Chelsea. He shouldn’t have replaced Mertesacker.

  • Oguntuase Amos says:

Some fans are no better than prostitutes. They have started writing off the team and the players. They now say Kos is not good and Giroud worse. Torres was worst at Chelsea yet they keep playing him and he is now coming good . I believe that the constant critics are no true gunners but hired writers whose duty is to hit the club under the belly. Who do we blame for the two defeats that Man U had suffered this season? See no good in the team fans should please get off. The team was not overwhelmed by Chelsea but were very unlucky. Some Referees would have ruled out Chelsea’s first goal because Torres was leaning on and pushing Kos. Also we are supposed to have a penalty when Carzola was pushed down in the box. Fans who want to die or decamp because of the defeat could do so, we are better without them because they are not better than idiots and prostitutes. Did we not beat Chelsea at Stamford bridge last year? This defeat is no big deal.

  • afc_fan! says:

Some Arsenal fans appear fickle to say the very least. It’s OK to be angry with losing to Chelsea but let’s be honest; we’ve tied City w/o our #1 and proved we can be their equal on the day and we lost to Chelsea from two VERY soft goals. Again, w/o our #1.
I like Koscielny but yesterday was far, far from his best game. He was basically at the root cause of both goals. Horrible marking on Torres for the 1st goal and unlucky to get the deflection on the 2nd but where was Mannone on both? Mistakes happen, fair enough. So, we can’t blame the loss just on Giroud. Cazorla had chances, Pudolski had chances, etc. We did well but Cech did better.
That said, Giroud needs to come good and SOON. The goals are the same size everywhere. After you’ve rounded the defender or put yourself in a great space to score it’s just about the finish and the size of the goal frames are universal. FINISH your chances, mate.

  • Aussie Jack says:

My own gut feeling is Giroud ,like Chamakh, is not cut out for the English type of football and lacks confidence. Like I keep repeating we haven`t got time to wait to see if these guys adapt Chelsea are already getting beyond reach.
Let`s forget crowing about the League championship and concentrate on the week to week stuff ,then see what happens.

  • Terry says:

giroud is excellent guys… he willl score, the way he rounded of cech jus shows that he has it in him.. his movement of the ball, his strength, his arial presence are all very good… its just a matter of time… at the same time i think wenger should try something different for the next game… why not play two towering cf’s for the next game…
