Former United boss urges Ferguson to forget about Van Persie

It seems one former Manchester United boss is not eager to see contract-rebel Robin van Persie join the Red Devils this summer.

In fact Tommy Docherty, who was in charge of United from 1972-77, has urged Sir Alex Ferguson not to bother trying to persuade the Dutch striker to Old Trafford this summer.

The 84-year-old was quoted in the Daily Express saying:

‘What right as a player does van Persie have to say Arsenal is not heading in the right direction?’

He added:

‘He might be looking to move, but I don’t think United should touch him with a bargepole.’

To be honest, I don’t think United are that keen on Van Persie, and I don’t see him joining the Manchester club either. Although it looks a good move for the 28-year-old, I can only see him joining their bitter-rivals Manchester City, if he stays in England, or moving to Serie A champions Juventus.

I don’t believe for a second that Docherty thinks that Van Persie isn’t a top player, but I reckon the forward’s attitude in recent days and long list of injuries over the years have disappointed the former Arsenal right-back.

United, or any other team for that matter, would be bonkers to splash out £25-30 million for a 28-year-old, injury-prone player who produced one exceptional season in eight for Arsenal.

Still, here’s hoping one of them are dumb enough to purchase him this summer for the amount stated above!

  • Bitterbeans says:

so I suppose he wanted fergie to get rid of rooney who did exactly the same?

He is right in one way though, what right does vp have after we looked after him so well to demand change. BUT for all we know he could be asking for a little more investement (like most fans) not loads, and they are telling him NO!

Im sure van persie loves arsenal , and he has risked his stature as legend by trying to expose the money grabbing board for what they are

How do you define a legend? A striker with one great season out of eight? RVP is a great striker but not an Arsenal legend. We should not ridicule the status of a legend.

Well said Tommy. He has no moral authority to question the clubs direction, simply he can leave AFC.
One good season does not make him great, besides everybody knows about his injury history and who knows he might have a nightmare of a season come August,i will not mind him having a bad injury,he’s shown his true colors.
