If Robin van Persie is chasing the cash then he’ll have to quit Arsenal – a frank yet honest statement from the chairman of our club Peter Hill-Wood.

As we all know the Dutch striker has only one-year left to run on his existing contract at Arsenal, with talks of a new one being put on hold until after the European Championships, as agreed by both club and player.

Juventus, Real Madrid, Anzhi Makhachkala and Manchester City have all been linked with a move for the 28-year-old this summer, with all the abovementioned clubs easily able to offer a much better wage package to the Dutch international if he were to extend his stay at The Emirates.

But Hill-Wood insists the Gunners will do everything they can to keep RVP at the club this summer.

Quoted in the Daily Mirror this past weekend, Hill-Wood said:

‘He is vital to us and has been an extremely good captain. But if somebody comes along and offers Robin £250,000 a week then I am afraid we cannot compete with that.

‘With players, you never know what they are going to do. Some players say they want silverware but when they have the chance to earn extraordinary money that has been pumped into the game, then you just have to hope they will stay because they are happy and loyal where they are.

‘There are players like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes at Manchester United who have been loyal to one club but players like that are few and far between.’

He went on to say:

‘Hopefully we can reach agreement with Robin and ideally he will extend his contract.

‘We have already brought in one new player in Lukas Podolski and I believe we will bring in more. I am confident we will, in fact.’

Hill-Wood concluded by saying that he hopes Robin does stays as he feels the club could mount a serious Premier League title challenge next season:

‘I just hope that Robin will be with us next season because I genuinely feel we can make a real challenge for the Premier League title.’

I don’t know what the hell is going to happen with Robin this summer, but it doesn’t look good does it?

Hill-Wood’s latest comments will certainly give interested clubs new hope, and I for one won’t be too surprised if he does decide to call it quits.

Do not often like the guy, and despite him seemingly braking the gagging policy in place over the whole situation… Gotta say he hasn’t done much wrong by me here.

Fair play to him, tell it like it is… We cannot and should not pay someone that much money! If it is about the money, he can go… We needed him this year but I do not think as a team we need him like we needed fab… Jack back (hopefully) one or two more strikers and we should be much stronger, with or without van, although much more with him.

I appreciate the chairman shedding some light in the matter

and the award for the most obvious statement of the year goes to……. Of course he’ll leave if money is the incentive. Blimey there are a lot of pointless stories doing the rounds at this time of year.

Both Scholes and Giggs make much more the Robin now, so why even mention them in this context. Man U pays it’s stars that is why they do not leave. Aresenal does not and has become a selling club , period, end of story.

hypocrite of a chairman. Answer this question. What was Arsenal interested in when they were selling players bought next to nothing and selling for so much? cash! Arsenal as a club for the trophy-less period was only interested in cash which they called “profitability of the club”. So shouldn’t he look for profitability of his future? Please, someone should let the chairman know profitability is not only cash but winning silverware. RVP! you go boy.
