How Arsenal players fared against Chelsea today – my ratings

Here are my Arsenal player ratings from today’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea (feel free to argue or agree with me):

Wojciech Szczesny – The young Pole had a fairly quite day at the office. Intercepted balls well and saved what was thrown at him, which wasn’t much. Read the game superbly well and kept a clean sheet in the process – 8/10

Bacary Sagna – The Frenchman got forward well, but not as much as we’re used to seeing. Got caught napping a few times in the first half, which led to a few Chelsea attacks down the left, but overall he did alright – 6.5/10

Laurent Koscielny – Another solid performance from the man dubbed by the Arsenal faithful as ‘The Boss’. Defended brilliantly and made some vital tackles and interceptions throughout the 90 minutes. Probably Arsenal’s man of the match – 8.5/10

Thomas Vermaelen – He and Koscielny covered each other well today. The Belgian international wasn’t really troubled and did what he had to do when called upon – 7.5/10

Kieran Gibbs – Possibly the best game I’ve seen Gibbo play in a long time. Got forward well to offer another attacking option, while tracking back when we didn’t have possession. Positioning still needs working on, but he’s still only 22 and this will come in time. Arsenal’s second best performer – 8/10

Alex Song – Despite playing three world-class balls to RVP (two of which were ruled offside) I thought his over passing today was poor. Tracked back well when Chelsea had the ball, but was very slow to release possession and was caught out on a number of occasions – 6.5/10

Aaron Ramsey – I thought the Welshman performed ok, but could have done a whole lot better. His passing was on point, but it looked like he was struggling to keep up with the pace of the game. Also gave the ball away a few times in the first half, but did rack back well when the full-back pushed forward – 6/10

Tomas Rosicky – Made some good runs forward to support RVP and his passing was neat and precise. However, he was lacking that creative spark, which was disappointing. Was substituted by Abou Diaby in the 64th minute. Also picked up a booking – 7/10

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – The youngster got forward well, but his movement could have been better if I’m honest. Never really saw those dynamic runs he produced against AC Milan a few weeks ago, but hey, he’s still young and learning. Was replaced by Andre Santos in the 69th minute – 6/10

Theo Walcott – Another poor performance from the highly overrated and inconsistent English winger. Never looked a threat going forward and lacked conviction throughout. Picked up a hamstring injury early in the second half and as a result was substituted in the 60th minute for Gervinho – 5.5/10

Robin van Persie – Just wasn’t the Dutchman’s day. Missed a great chance in the first half, which hit the post, after Walcott swung in a great delivery from a free-kick. Over elaborated in front of goal when he could have simply had a pop at the Chelsea net. First touch was poor throughout and lacked that killer instinct we’ve seen all season – 7/10

Subs

Gervinho – Did ok when he came on for Theo, but nothing that was influential or noticeable to be honest – 5.5/10

Abou Diaby – Passed the ball about well and kept things tidy in midfield – 6/10

Andre Santos – Came on for Chambo in the 69th minute. Got forward a few times, but the Brazilian never really offered anything in attack nor defensively – 5/10

Don’t agree with RVP rating, just because it’s Robin he didn’t deserve a 7, he was a 6 at best. Way off target and was greedy when he could have played others in to score he took it on himself. Theo night have been on the bench for all he did and Ramsey got caught in possession and lost the ball on at least 4 occasions. I also think Rossie score of 7 was a bit hight too. Our defence was solid (thank goodness they didn’t have Drogba in the side) midfield and sticker were blow par ….. but a point is a point

fuhhh…we are unlucky and lucky as well. Have Di matteo fill in his starting 11, i think they would have won these game through drogba.

  • Steve of Chiang Mai says:

A little harsh on Santos. Got into the box a couple of times and made 2 or 3 vital interceptions. Ox was no better than Theo today and deserved a 5 – young or not he should be able to find a red shirt with a simple pass.

  • Zac says:

Too generous for Ramsey. Surely, we all have sympathy for him but clearly he is not up to standard to start as an arsenal midfielder. He lacks pace, dribbling skills, vision , clinical passing and shooting accuracy. I thought santos contributed well to the arsenal’s attack and deserves more credit. Would have liked to see gervinho on the left and the Ox on the right.

Credit should be given to Ramsey a list he had a fair game

  • Don says:

Ramsey and Song were poor.Ramsey was caught in possession 3 times in the first half alone. He looks too slow at this level. As for Song his passing was wayward throughout. The two stand out players were TV and Kos.RVP is knackered as he hasnt had a rest this season because we dont have back up.Theo was his usual inconsistent self

  • Dacqri says:

I am trying to figure out how Gervinho got so low in the starting pecking order?

  • Iyke Achigbue says:

We played well defensively but lacked creativity in the midfield.Rvp in my opinion should be given 6 while Ramsy should be left out of the squad for now…

  • Taaza says:

Ramsey has the potential to be a great player but his wheels have completely fallen off, he’s burned out. Needs rest. Too many turnovers. Didn’t seem to have his head in the game. I agree he did do well when tracking back and all. but Wenger believes in him way to much.

  • Le gunner says:

    Ramsy a 6 ?
    Are you serious ?
Ramsy 3 and that’s being generous.
Just cos he’s been bad doesn’t mean a few good passes qualifies as a good game.
Rank him in comparison to other players doing their job !
Santos ain’t a midfield. Remember that.
    RVP was absent.
Diaby did well for being out so long.
People tolerate and forgive useless Ramsy for years even though he ain’t arsenal quality yet are harsh on any other player.

One of the worst arsenal displays again.

    Thanks Arsene !
7 years and we hide behind same excuses and lame promises.

very true…Ramsey is always forgiven and that has been going on very long however they are so hash on diaby..i think he had a good game..he has been out long for God sake

    • jean62 says:
