‘It’s paramount that they sign him up and get it done quickly’

Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes Theo Walcott should be handed a new contract as soon as possible.

The 22-year-old speedy winger pulled out a Man of the Match performance in Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Newcastle at The Emirates on Monday night, by setting up both goals for his side.

The England international’s current contract expires at the end of next season and Wright, who won five major trophies with the Gunners, thinks Arsene Wenger should reward the forward with a new deal.

The 48-year-old told The Sun recently:

‘We’re talking about a 22-year-old England player. I’m very excited about him, he’s fantastic.

‘People say he’s not consistent enough but I think the only reason why that is is because right-wing is not his natural position.

‘I think he’s a striker who runs on to things and getting in between central defenders he would cause havoc.’

Wrighty went onto say:

‘It’s paramount that they sign him up and get it done quickly. He’s going to be an England player for many years to come so the sooner they sort him out, the better.’

To be honest, despite his display on Monday, I still don’t rate Theo.

The guy has bags of potential and could become a great player for our club, but he still seems stuck on the same level. I will admit that his final ball has improved, but he still hesitates on the ball and doesn’t use his speed to great effect. He is a very frustrating figure to watch and that’s putting it lightly.

Would I offer him a new contract? Well I think this solely depends on if someone better comes in this summer. If know one does then I think Arsenal must do what they can to tie him down to a new deal.

One or two good games doesn’t make you a player. Hopefully Theo can build on this and prove me and the rest of his doubters wrong.

Here’s hoping he does!

I agree with Ian Wright on this one we should definitely extend his contract. He’s nowhere near as bad as some people make him out to be, at least he keeps the opposition fullback pegged in their own half. He can be a little frustrating at times but I believe he will come good with age, some players take longer to mature so we shouldn’t be too quick to criticise rather than be patient.

Tony I got to say we have to keep a player like Walcott. Our squad isn’t as big as City or Utd or even Chelsea they have benches that can change games. This is a luxury that we do not have but absolutely need, especially when injuries mount up (like they do with us) you will need a big squad. The understanding he has with RVP the fact he can run past almost anyone and has a good shooting ability it’s a no brainer. Sign him up

atleast appreciate walcots contributions since joining arsenal. His weakeness lies with midfield. if he is not provided with the ball in time then you can’t expect him to perform. besides alot was said bount rosick when he went through difficult moments. sale hom was the word on every site but now realise how his contribution is to a team at the moment. Let wenger find a good passer in midfield and you will see how walcot is. remember he is not a winger but tends to score more goals than most premeir wingers. name many wwith goal tally like walcote in premier.

If he was playing somewhere in Europe we would all look at him and say we need him! Wenger, pay whatever you need to – he’s already at a top level and only 22! Imagine where he will be in 3 years time.

It doesn’t take any considering from my point of view. Get him signed up.

theo is a top player, the best players rate him such as messi, xavi. theo is the only player who can give arsenal a real chance when the ball is cleared long. he just needs to work on his fitness and awareness now, sometimes these thing take a while just look at parker or ian wright himself. walcott will be the front man in the arsenal and enlgand 11 in a couple of years at most

  • Toye says:

What walcot needs is to improve on his skills. He stop repeating the same error all times. He is good player so i suport wright.
