Ask and you shall receive Thomas

‘I am fed up playing at left back. I don’t think I am good there. I want to achieve my highest level and I can’t do that on the left.’

These were the words of Thomas Vermaelen who, over the weekend, expressed his frustration at being played in the left-back position – which he believes he does not perform well in – and wants to be placed back in the heart of the defence to once again reach his best standard.

He added:

‘I play there to help the team but it gives me no satisfaction as I can’t reach my best standard.

‘I do my job but seldom feel content after matches. If the team wins I am happy, but it remains frustrating.’

Undoubtedly, the 26-year-old’s best position is at centre-back, but due to several injuries to pretty much all of our full-backs, the Belgian international has been forced to play on the left side of the defence.

Well Thomas you need not worry anymore as it looks highly likely that your wish will be granted, especially after Per Mertesacker suffered what looked like a long-term injury at the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon.

To be honest, I think the Belgian does a satisfactory job in the full-back position, doesn’t look formidable there but doesn’t look out of place either. However, it is evidently clear that he doesn’t perform the same as he would in his preferred role, but I think he covered the position well for us and ultimately helped the team out in a very difficult period.

But it looks like, unless Wenger replaces Merts with Johan Djourou, Vermaelen will be shifted across to the centre of defence for the next few weeks. So everyone will be happy!

  • gunner boy says:

why don you print the full transcript which shows this isn’t a statement, but a compilation of a series of questions…This may have been published by a series of newspapers, but their translation of the interview to not put the actual questions leads to many observations of why not??? You an arsenal webpage regurgitating this rubbish does nothing but show your support for the anti arsenal brigade

Look up your facts before saying this site promotes the anti-arsenal brigade. Besides, what is so anti about what I wrote? I turned something ‘bad’ into something positive. So what are you on about mate.
