Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes Arsene Wenger should sign Arsenal legend Thierry Henry on loan, claiming the 34-year-old could still do a ‘top job’.

The New York Red Bulls star has been training with his former club for the past few weeks during the MLS off-season, with Wenger admitting this past Friday that he is considering the possibility of signing the French forward on a two-month loan deal when the January transfer window opens, but has yet to make an enquiry about it.

However, Redknapp has been left perplexed, wondering why Arsenal haven’t already signed Henry:

‘Why are Arsenal waiting to strike a loan deal for Thierry Henry?

‘He may not be as quick as he was before he went off to New York Red Bulls and he might not be as prolific in front of goal, but his arrival will give them a shot in the arm and take some of the weight from Robin van Persie’s shoulders.’

‘They are losing two strikers to the Africa Cup of Nations and, even if Henry is only used as a sub, his presence warming up will send fear through defenders.’

The former Liverpool midfielder concluded by stating that even at 34, Henry could still produce the goods:

‘Even at 34, I’m convinced he can do a top job.’

As an ardent Arsenal fan I would like to ask my fellow Gooners, the club and Mr. Wenger himself – what have we got to lose? Just sign him. #BringBackHenry.

i think that wenger is only after temporary deals this winter.

i think the deals will be henry, gourcuff and abidail all french its what he knows best.

either that or there will be no signings. lets be honest what are we actually missing from the first choice x1

sagna (back in 4 weeks) covered by kos/jd/coq

wilshire (back in 6 weeks) covered by arteta/ramsey/rosicky/benayoun

gervinho (away for a few weeks) covered by arshavin/benayoun/chamberlain/ryo

santos is the only player that may be missed although in tv we have a better left back than him.

anyone else who is out or away are only substitutes

for me the best 3 defenders at the club are tv5 per and kos, all 3 are fit and in the back 4 so its only the 4th best defender at the club sagna that is missing. i would just play miquel alongside per with kos and tv at full backs until sagna returns. even if gibbs and santos were fit they would not get in my first choice x1.

As much as I believe in miracles, I simply cannot accept that a 34-year old, away from the EPL for many years, accustomed to the US pace of the game, can make a reasoned comeback to the top division of English football, particularly AS A STRIKER.
If Arsene Wenger has funds to spare, better by far to buy in the local (EPL) market.
Let the memory of Henry remain for ever in our memories, rather than watch him labour on the field.

    demba ba?anyone?

he only just signed for Newcastle and has been a scoring machine, he will not go for cheap! Besides he will be wasted on the bench because he will never displace RvP.

I’d rather Podolski anyway, he can play on the left wing aswell.

  • Scott says:

My issue us signing Henry is a stop gap measure, where we need another too striker full time. Signing ,for example,Podolski, sends a big message out, especially to RVP and may go along way to him signing a new contract.
Signing Henry says we are always looking for a cheap way out.
I believe Henry would do a great job,but I don’t think he is what the club needs long term.

  • Aussie Jack says:

Fact…RVP needs support NOW. Fact….Finding a top stiker in January (at the right price) difficult. Fact….Only Wenger is in a position to know Henry`s fitness level and if he is up to the task. Fact…If RVP breaks down so does Arsenal`s season. So, if we can`t find a permanent striker and none of the present squad fits the bill then, for the sake of two months, I think Wenger will sign him.

henry would be a good one. he is better than chamakh and park currently. he was in an easy league, MLS, but he was easily one of the top scorers there.

so he still has something in him. playing on the left, cutting in. it can happen. and we all know if wenger makes the decision, it will most likely be the right one.

for the love of arsenal buy a striker…be realistic its only a two month loan.what if someone gets injured after that and by the way he is not that good anymore, you guys are remembering Henry of the past not the present

  • mark says:

agree. good backup for RVP and can also play on the wing for gervinho if need be. would be surprised if this didnt happen as i think its the perfect short-term solution and im sure Henry would love it.

  • mark says:

also, we’re not giving chamakh enough credit. I realise he has been far from impressive so far this season, but i put that down to lack of opportunities.
when we got chamakh, and RVP was injured, despite chamakhs limited technical ability, he kept us in chase for the title, scoring and creating many goals.
so, hopefully RVP does have a good injury-free season, but Chamakh is capable given the chance.
Then there is Gervinho who can play up front with Oxlade able to do a good job on the wing.
    Oh, and Walcott!!!
