Who I think should replace Barca-bound Fabregas as captain

I sincerely dreaded writing this article and cannot believe this is happening. However, we all knew that this scenario would materialize sooner rather than later.

With the impending departure of Cesc Fabregas looming over the Emirates, who should be our new skipper?

Off the top of my head, I can immediately come up with a short-list of players for the job:

1. Robin Van Persie

2. Thomas Vermaelen

3. Alex Song

4. Jack Wilshere

5. Aaron Ramsey

Van Persie, Vermaelen and Song are my top three choices, with Wilshere and Ramsey being too young to captain, but they are our future.

Van Persie would seem to be Wenger’s first choice. However, strikers typically do not fit the role of captain.

In my opinion, Song was Arsenal’s most valuable midfielder last season, so he should get some strong consideration from Wenger. No one really expected anything from him when he first appeared for Arsenal, but he has flourished alongside Wilshere.

Vermaelen is another great contender for the captain’s armband and possess some of the great qualities to be a successful leader – let’s not forget he is ALL HEART. He defends his team-mates and sticks up for them when he feels harm was intended, he is a man that when fit will give 110% for the cause. He has a great long range shot, he’s good with his head and he always jumps in on the attack when needed. If we only we had him in the squad for the 4-4 demoralizing draw against Newcastle, things would’ve be different that’s for sure. Anyway, enough talk of what could have been, we still have an amazing squad of players for the future.

Don’t lose hope Gooners, new heroes will rise and remember that no one man is greater than the club.

P.S: Best of luck to you Cesc and your career at Barcelona. You will be missed.

The rather obvious choice for the captaincy is Tomas
Rosicky ,but the fickle Arsenal fans and bloggers like this one Sonny ,cannot see it ?

  • Let Vamaleen take the captain’s armband..

  • Let Vamaleen take the captain’s armband. He is a natural leader.

NO MATE!!!! Why is Wilshere too young? He’s 20 in just over 4 months time and both Fabregas and Adams were Captains at 21.

Sure, Van Persie seems to have the temperament but Vermaelen and Wilshere have the right control over it, I can’t for a second think why you would suggest Song but it’s allowed I guess. My only worry is that Vermaelen or Van Persie becoming Captain, it potentially stops the man best suited for the job for several years. We don’t want Wilshere having to wait until he’s about 28 before becoming team captain. He already has maximum respect from the team and from players at other clubs. He has the temperament and will vocally bark at any slackers in the team on the pitch. He’s a Roy Keane crossed with the technical skill and vision of Fabregas. When Adebayor and Gallas were still in the team, they pinpointed Van Persie as the biggest disruption in the dressing room. Van Persie is spiteful, he ridicules players and knocks their confidence. He sneers at them and has this narcisstic nature. He thinks he can say what he wants because he feels he is the teams most important player and that Wenger will take his side (which he has done).

Vermaelen, Chesney and Ramsey would be my choice in that order AFTER Wilshere. I also think Van Persie will be the next big player to be sold, maybe next Summer.

There are only 2 true captains in the current squad: Vermaelen and Wilshere, the other candidates have questions about various aspects of their tempraments.

Samba, if signed, should be made captain; he has he correct qualities required, has done the job befoe, and, as a newcomer, would probably find it easier to hand out the bollockings when they are needed.

As it stands, we have no leader, no vision and no chance this season. I have serious doubts that we will have more than a single point by the end of August and have been relegated to the Europa League.

Longterm, a bad result on Tuesday, could be the best thing to happen to the club for years.
