The ‘super quality’ signing Wenger was on about?

So Arsene Wenger finally sealed the services of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Southampton, in a deal reportedly worth £12 million – which could later rise to £15 million – the ‘super quality’ signing Mr. Wenger spoke of a few days ago perhaps?

Over the weekend, the Frenchman stated:

‘We want to add not quality, but super quality. We hope to give you some good news soon. Next week, something might happen.’

To be honest, I thought Wenger was horsing around when he said this, but it seems he has kept his word…well to a degree.

The 17-year-old, who bagged 9 goals and 8 assists in 33 appearances for Southampton last season, is regarded as one of England’s promising youngsters and had this to say after signing a long-term contract at the Emirates:

‘I’m so excited to be joining Arsenal. It’s a fantastic club and I’m really looking forward to the opportunity of playing football at the highest level.’

‘Arsenal have a great manager in Arsene Wenger, top quality players and an attractive style of play. These were all important factors in me choosing to sign for Arsenal.’

‘I’m proud to be joining Arsenal, but I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Southampton for their help and support during the early part of my career, for which I will always be grateful.’

‘I’m now looking forward to meeting all my new team mates and giving absolutely everything in an Arsenal shirt.’

Chamberlain has the ability and potential to succeed at Arsenal, but is he a ‘super quality’ signing? Not in my book (sorry guys, but he isn’t). Don’t’ get me wrong, he is a good buy and one which may appease the fans, but he is not of super standards that Wenger claimed he would bring in.

The England Under-21 international is Wenger’s third acquisition this summer and hopefully not his last. I reckon he will sign another player before the window closes at the end of the month (hopefully a much needed centre-back). However, I believe Chamberlain is the player that Wenger was alluding to over the weekend, he must have been.

I really don’t mind that we have signed the former Southampton winger; in fact, I welcome him to the club and wish him the best. However, if he is to be our biggest and last buy this summer, then Wenger must seriously revise this.

Ofcourse this is not the last signing…and when our boss mentioned super quality he has something else up his sleeves…mata…sneijder….ribery….but it is a difficult business game that is played…we do not just play the easy game like city, chelsea or real…going out and buy…with owners money…we lay a financing puzzle…if fab stays and nasri signs up for 4 new years …it is a different situation…chelsea or city would not care about…they would continue to buy..and make losses on many players…in the end…it is about winning…I do hope we in the long run are doing the right thing..however..I still think we need more quality…even with nasri and fab…a true leader(english)..a defender…and a striker..

I think this is our super signing mate. Mata will cost us £26M, which Wenger won’t pay, while Sneijder and Ribery’s wages would be astronomical. As stated, I think he will sign one more player, but not of great quality, hopefully it is a much needed defender. Just my thoughts.

For goodness sake how about a bit of optimism old chap, or are you happier being pessimistic all the time. Why not wait and see what happens before looking on the bleak side. THINK POSITIVE.

        • Tony Merakli says:

Mick, I remain positive, but when Wenger signs a kid it does take its toll on you. I never once condemned the signing of AOC. What gets me is that Wenger is willing to splash £15M on a kid, rather than say someone like Mata. He may purchase another player, but I dont think it will be of great quality. Just my opinion of course.

I think mr. Wenger has lost his memory. Infact, i am in deep angry and pain, because i can be in a river and allow soap to enter my eyes. I’m ashame of mr. Wenger, please let him leave d club, maybe he is old and cannot used his memory effectively.

When I used to swim in rivers using regular soap, it would also often enter my eyes. Like Cyaltus, this would put me in deep, deep angry and pain.

But fear not, there is a solution!

Simple’s Pure Soap for Sensitive Skin:

Use only as directed. Please note this is not a remedy for memory loss or amnesia.

  • Wotnot says:

Get out of the river then. What are you doing in the river with soap anyway? Use Johnsons baby soap – its designed to be kind to your eyes & wont sting as much.

i think our super signing doesn’t need to be one superstar. bring in 2 or 3 new players, we don’t lack quality we lack depth!!!

    i feel another squillaci coming.

  • trugooner21 says:

I am shocked that this kid cost that much money, Considering we need a quality CB and Wenger claims 17 Mil is too much to pay for a proven EPL player, then why would he turn around and spend 15 mil on a kid with no experience. If i am remembering correctly, didn’t Arshavins club record signing cost us 15 mil? If this is true, Wenger opted not to smash the transfer fee record on a quality signing but instead chose to match it on a seventeen year old kid! I am sure the kid is good but damn!

  • Edub says:

Let the boy start to play for us before you write him off.i reckon one more defender and that’s our lot. One thing for sure, we’ve got a hell of a lot of pace up front now, chamberlain, walcott, gervinho, not many defences that can deal with these three! Counter attacking teams dream!

  • stu says:

juan mata will only be signed if nasri or cesc leave

gary cahill will be signed THIS week

  • abiaz says:

i think wenger should not be bramed cause if ayoung man is costing all that amount of money, he must be some one who can do something eg wilshare is a young player but he has contributed alot to the club. so i hope that the guy will do something important.be blessed.

  • Arsenal1Again says:

Has any other reporter or Blogger thought Oxlade-Chamberlain is the Super Quality signing Wenger was talking abouT? …… I didn’t think so.

Is anybody surprised to see it mentioned on Gunnersphere? …… I dodn’t think so.

I hope the person writing this stuff has a day job.

    • Tony Merakli says:

Well it’s my opinion isn’t it. why should I follow others and think what they think?

As stated, I dont condemn the signing, I just think its the biggest one that we will see, that’s all.

Dont know what you are trying to get at really, but if it is an insult, then its a pretty poor one mate. If you dont like the blogs on this site then go somewhere else, not fussed.
