Can Arsenal’s new boy surpass Theo Walcott?

|

Former Gunner Stewart Robson has backed Arsenal’s newest signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to become better than Theo Walcott.

Robson recently told talkSPORT:

‘They’ve gone down the same route as with Theo Walcott but I think he’s going to be a better player than Theo Walcott.’

‘He’ll give more to Arsenal over the next few years because he is more talented than Theo Walcott.’

‘Theo Walcott is probably a greater athlete but Oxlade-Chamberlain will be a better technical player and probably a more intelligent footballer.’

It has been widely reported that we were chasing Chamberlain for over a year, but we were unable to agree a deal with Southampton, thus nothing happened.

Looking at Theo Walcott, you would currently see it difficult for Chamberlain to become better than him. Now this isn’t meant to be disrespectfully towards Chamberlain in anyway, it’s just that Theo has been with Arsenal for several years now and has proven his worth to the club.

If you had asked me 18 months ago would Jack Wilshere have turned out as good as he has done, I would have said not a chance – I was clearly mistaken. I thought Jack would be talented, but he has surpassed my expectations.

Chamberlain has exactly the same potential to do just that. The 17-year-old winger obviously has the drive and determination to perform for a club like Arsenal, and I am sure the boys at the Emirates are going to take him under their wing and develop his game.

The only person who can decide if Chamberlain is going to be better than Walcott is the player himself. He knows what he needs to do to become a better player and I am sure that he and Walcott will both be working together a lot as the days go by. Walcott is the perfect tutor for Alex because he’s been there and done it.

Personally, I am glad that Wenger signed Chamberlain and look forward to seeing him play this season for us.

I think he’s a special player who can only get better with time. We will certainly be hearing a lot about him within the next 12 months, that’s for sure.

Will Chamberlain become a better player than Walcott?

  • The candid gooner says:

Experience will always count. If Walcot is played in his favourite position, then we ain’t seen nothing yet. Alex is equally good though!

  • Arsenal1Again says:

Walcott would come second to Alex in in all positions. It’s a key reason for buying him, to push Walcott’s development. Although a little older Ashley Young has surpassed Walcott now, and Walcott is playing n Alex’s favourite position. If the lad doesn’t get his finger ut, he’ll be out of the Arseal line up and the England line up.
