Arsene Wenger – hero or villain?

|
Image for Arsene Wenger – hero or villain?

After 15 years of service there is are increasing calls for Arsene Wenger to be sacked or resign.. but is this just?

Having joined back in 1996 and winning the double in 1998 and 2002 as well as heartache in the Champions League and Uefa Cup finals. There has now been a barren spell of 6 trophy-less seasons.

But who is to blame? Is it Arsene? Or maybe the influx of foreign riches to the Premier League and the building of Ashburton Grove.

Wenger is held in high esteem throughout football for his playing and financial philosophy. Since joining he has spent less on transfers than all of his rivals including Spurs! Yet Arsene has qualified for the Champions league for 14 years running (longer than any other team in the competition at present) and 13 times more than bitter rivals Spurs.

But is the Champions League qualification enough? Arsenal went close to winning the cup in 2006 but have failed to win any silverware in 6 years.

The issue Arsene now faces is the fans are used to winning, he is a victim of his own success. Would Arsenal fans prefer Wenger spends big every transfer window and put the club in an unstable financial position to increase the chances of winning trophies, bear in mind the big spending Manchester United, Man City and Chelsea could still outspend Arsene.

No amount of money can guarantee trophies with the current level of competition in the Premier League and CL. We all remember what happened to Leeds after they borrowed money against future success that didn’t follow. How many Leeds fans would swap their 1-2 years challenging for trophies for 10 years of mid-table football in the Premier League?

What now for Arsenal fans? Do we get behind Wenger’s (frustrating) transfer philosophy and accept we can only push for titles with some luck? Or do we call for his sacking and increased spending to fight with the Sheikh’s of the football world and jeopardize the Arsenal Legacy created over the last 20 years?

I’m sure most mid-table sides would be ecstatic with a top four finish and Champions League football without debt. But what’s your take? And is Arsene the right man to steet Arsenal towards future success?

The fact that this is even a question is embarrassing. We would be nothing more then Everton without Wenger. There are a lot of stupid people in the world though so don’t expect anything to change.

Please don’t insult our intelligence, Shane. Wenger did well for us in his first eight seasons, but now he has clearly lost his touch. Honestly, do you and the rest of the AKBs want to give the coward a job-for-life on £6m a year and watch as we slide to midtable mediocrity?

WENGER OUT AND HIS AKB SHEEP OUT!!!

Finally! An article which actually makes sense! Arsene Wenger is an amazing manager and every year he is critisized for lack of trophies. He has helped this club be consistent through the last 6 years through the building and relocation of a new stadium and boardroom instability. I applaud the articles which highlite exactly what he has been dealing with and the lack of funds available. I agree that there is almost a ‘lack’ of ambition this year but people only say that because of the Man City’s of this world spending ridiculous amounts of money on players which aren’t worth it. I would rather support a club which earns success rather than buying success as those clubs do not succeed in the long term (Leeds). What happens when these owners lose their money in this economic crisis? And Financial FairPlay? They will have players they can’t pay and will fall into bankrupcy. What that space!

you must be smoking d same mind bending weed that makes AW delussional which has made him turn AFC into a mediocre team without winning any trophy in d last 6yrs nd yet he keeps talking about a young team dat would wave d magic wand and take all d major trophies to emirates. If need be to spend big to get the rigth players dat can win us d league do dat nd stop deceiving us with his little brats i.e jenkinson, oxdale,campbell.etc.

  • I’ll keep saing this, wenger cannot change, he should be sacked before he send arsenal to championship

An ambitionless stubborn manager who has lost the plot.
Maybe once a hero but now a villain.
    In arsene we rust.

I’m happy that he is our manager and not a mancini who can only win (and he still hardly win anything!) with hundreds of millions backing him. I’m not sure whether some of you has no long term thinking, or are just glory hunters that support a club IF they win something. there are 20 teams in england and only 1 can be crown champion. So what happen to the other 4-5 clubs that are suppose to be challenging for title? they do not win anything despite all the money they spent! am not sure whether is it the life in Africa where everything have to come quick before your life ends, or its just a bunch of so called fans who knew nothing about running a club whilst thinking that they can do a better job! think people. don’t be a narrow minded SOB that can only critizes someone without looking at the bigger picture

peeps, do you guys think Arsen don’t like wining trophies? every coach wants to win, he could have as well left arsenal if he didn’t love the club when the board told him he wont have much cash during the transfer window, price to pay for moving to the EMIRATES! Though it must be said now that the club is financially stable buying cayhil/jagielka or samba shouldn’t be a problem but then sacking him will be the greatest undoing!

This never-ending thirst for silverware at all costs is becoming irritating. OK, a trophy or two is the icing on the cake, but the goodness of the cake is all important. In other words, the exciting attacking way the football is played for the entertainment of the spectators, is more important than any trophy. Remember that three of the four Cups are largely governed by the luck of the draw, only the EPL being a truly season-long test.
Also remember that 99% of Clubs in the UK and Europe would gladly swap places with Arsenal and its record in the UK and Europe since Arsene Wenger became Manager.
Let’s analyse the present position. We have two major players who want away. They will depart when suitable buyers appear.
Other players who haven’t made the grade will leave in due course.
We are buying and have bought new blood during the current Window which still has three weeks to run. It would have been nice to buy earlier but
ideal transactions aren’t always possible, however easy they appear to be to the ill-informed.
So, fellow Gooners, when all things are considered, we should feel lucky in our choice of Club to support, together with the Manager its Board has appointed to lead. There is none better.
