Arsenal legend denied final farewell

Gunners great Thierry Henry was left gutted after his farewell appearance in an Arsenal shirt were dismissed.

Henry, who bagged 226 goals in 369 appearances for the Gunners, wanted to play the last five minutes for Arsenal against his current club New York Red Bulls in their Emirates Cup friendly yesterday afternoon.

However, referee Kevin Friend denied the Frenchman this opportunity as it was against FIFA regulations and rules, which states that a player cannot appear for both clubs in the same game.

The 33-year-old striker said:

‘I wanted to do it and I’m sure the fans would have wanted to see it, but we were told at half-time it was not possible. Stupid rules.’

Arsene Wenger, who saw his side concede a late own goal to the MLS side yesterday, said:

‘Thierry was desperate to do it.’

To be honest, it would have been great to see Thierry in the Arsenal shirt once again, even just for five minutes as he is simply a legend – a phrase I said about 100 times at the Emirates yesterday.

It was truly an honour to see Henry live once again and in front of the Arsenal faithful, but I think the occasion would’ve been more special for everyone had they allowed him to wear the red and white of Arsenal just one more time.
