Are Arsenal edging closer to landing this Italian international?

It appears Arsenal are edging closer to signing Italian international Riccardo Montolivo, after the midfielder announced that he has fallen out with management at Fiorentina and is now refusing to sign a new contract with the Serie A club (sound familiar?).

Fiorentina have stated that they only want to sell Montolivo abroad after Milan made their interest in signing him known.

Pantaleo Corvino, who is the Fiorentina’s sporting director, told reporters:

‘Montolivo doesn’t believe in the Fiorentina project. As a result, the player will be sold abroad.’

Arsene Wenger has since been quizzed about a move for Montolivo and Lazio’s Zarate. However, the Frenchman appears to keeping his cards very close to his chest:

‘Zarate and Montolivo? No, there is absolutely nothing from us. But even if we were interested, I would not say.’

A very smart move from Wenger in my opinion, as I think he needs to be very coy on who his transfer targets are. Yes it is frustrating for the fans, as we have no idea who we are going for, but better that than lose players to the likes of Man City and Chelsea.

Question is – would Montolivo be a good signing for the club?

In all honesty, after the fiasco with Samir Nasri, I am cautious about Arsenal signing a player that hasn’t had the best of times at Fiorentina, having only scored 13 goals in 188 appearances for the club as well as trying to force a move away from the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

In my opinion there are better players out there that Arsenal should be concentrating on and in this instant I hope Wenger’s comment of ‘there is absolutely nothing from us’ is indeed true.

look are Manchester city a G16 rated elite ? What history do Manchester city have? the facts state it all the most successful clubs in premier league have been liverpool, manchester utd , arsenal, nottingham forest, then we the chelsea money influx give them a bit of success but what’s chelsea’s record compared to arsenal? Manchester city first time in the champs league this season does it is mean they going to beat the likes of barca? real madrid , ac milan and win it ? I don’t think so look what happened to spurs ? one season champs league qualification doesn’t make Manchester City a ‘big’ club its just a club with stupid amounts of investment and pay packages – nasri and clichy will regret it when there sitting on the benchs at city. look what happened to robinho? big signing for city what did he achieve ? its simple if you want a better wage go to city, not because its a ‘big’ club. Fabregas, henry, I respect they moved on to a bigger club than arsenal barca not the likes of city just because of a rise in pay. Nasri is stupid coming out with such comments I have no respect for players like that.
I am sick n tired of all the criticism some fans of arsenal have been giving to wenger, who had heard of thierry henry, robert pires, lgunberg, patrick viera, even fabregas, nasri, walcott the list goes on and on, yes we not the best team in the league but who would thought the likes of henry who was criticised at his first season at arsenal became one the best players to grace the premier league, yes I miss the days where arsenal were just unstoppable but how can you replace that invincible team? so city? are they going to sign the likes of messi? No simple because he’s at an established power club of europe, and yes arsenal are a power club of europe and now give the professor arsene wenger the credit he deserves he has brought success to arsenal with hardly any money spent, will leave the club in a good economic position (chelsea/city what happens when the oil runs out in the middle east and russia or the owners just get bored of football and leave the clubs??) that’s why arsenal will always be a bigger and respected club than city and chelsea.
