Could Wenger’s proposed £12M + Bendtner bid land this Serbian centre-back?

Arsene Wenger has allowed Nicklas Bendtner to speak to Borusssia Dortmund this week, in the hope that the player can be used as a makeweight in a deal to bring Neven Subotic to the Emirates. If the terms are favourable to the newly-crowned Bundesliga champions, Wenger will offer £12 million plus Bendtner for the centre-back.

Subotic has been instrumental in transforming Dortmund from mid-table draw specialists into one of the most exciting sides in Europe. He has attracted the attention of some of the biggest sides in the world including Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Chelsea.

In the last January transfer window, Chelsea offered around £18m for the defender, but it was rejected immediately. Undoubtedly, Dortmund would like to keep the Serbian international, however a key factor in the refusal to allow him to join Chelsea was the team’s high league position, seeing him as crucial to winning their first title in nine years.

With that under the belt, the board may be more willing to listen to offers for Subotic who himself is seeking a move abroad to further his career. Although competing with Dortmund in the Champions League is something Subotic would feel very proud to do, moving to a bigger and better team to go further in that competition is surely on his list on any player’s ambitions.

Arsenal have been linked with the player for as long as Chelsea, but with David Luiz being bought instead of Subotic last January, it seems the only thing stopping Wenger is his own reluctance when in comes to splashing the cash.

But with the Frenchman remaining so quiet in the press until this week, it is fair to conclude he has a few big deals lined up. Subotic, subject to co-operation on Dortmund’s part, will be the first of these.

Unfortunately it’s not ‘likely that he has a few big deals lined up’ as you put it. No more in I fear just the same old dead wood in the squad. I give it by Xmas before fans are calling for his head

cant agree with you more but i think as usual we will be in the race for all the titles until the same thing that happened this year happens again i give AW the season and if he dont deliver i reckon he will resign

He won’t resign him and kroenke are having a proper love in, wenger interviewed gazidis for christ’s sake and it happens that regularly I now call it meltdown march it keeps me upbeat about the massive and inevitable disappointment every year.

There’s a saying: a leopard can’t change it’s spots. So our leopard won’t pay big money, dig for a bargain or youngster and promote from within our existing squad.

Neven seems to get a lot of attention, but I believe that Matt Hummels would be a better acquisition, as he offers the same physical quality as Subotic, but he (Matt) seems more composed at the back. And both are the same age.

YES!!! Finally! Ive been saying this for ages! Rafer man you know your stuff, Neven is top quality no doubt but from watching the bundesliga Hummels always looked a better fit for the premiership and yet doesnt get half the press. TBH id love if we signed either, they are both better than samba or cahill.

To be honest if Wenger was to do a player plus cash deal he would probably bring in Goetze rather than Subotic. I’d be happy with either of those two.

  • Anon says:

Doubt they would go for it …. dortmund are a team on the up playing in a league that is slowly regaining its past glory and having just won the league will want to try his hand at the champions league

Dortmund are doing us a favour by taking bender when no one else is interested and i do not think losing their best defender was ever in mind.

  • personly feel the subotic is overated would prefer someone with prem experience ie cahill

  • WC says:

Subotic would be a great addition to the defense but the real underrated player for Dortmund is his partner – Mats Hummels. Now that is a beast of a player. Subotic is very classy, Carvalho like if you ask me. Hummels is the beast, the player who commands the defense with his body and strength, while Subotic adds the flair and brain.

Vermaelen is very Subotic like while we really have no fighter who is just raw power like Hummels. Both would be an amazing coup but if I had to pick one based on what we already have then Hummels isn’t like any defender we currently have in our ranks.
