Surely Wenger should be targeting ‘bigger’ players than this Blackburn starlet?

|

Blackburn boss Steve Kean has warned Arsenal off making any bid for the talented Phil Jones this summer.

Kean told the 19-year-old defender that moving to North London would be a foolish, as he would spend more time on the bench than playing games.

Jones has been in scintillating form this season and is being tracked by many of the Premier Leagues top clubs, including Manchester United and Chelsea.

Earlier in the week, Kean was quoted in the Daily Mail saying:

‘I don’t know if Phil would go straight into the team at a Champions League club. He is a Rolls-Royce, he is a fantastic player and is bound to attract interest. He plays like a 28-year-old, he’s got experience and calmness and when needed he has got that turn of pace.’

‘You always brace yourself for bids – we have had offers before for him and I am sure there will be solid ones in again. He will move on some time, but I can see him being captain here first.’

Jones came through the Blackburn youth academy, and managed to make 28 appearances for the Lancashire club last season.

He has since been called up to the England under-21 squad for the European Championships this summer in Denmark.

The question on my lips is, surely Arsenal should be attracting bigger players than Phil Jones this summer?

Sure he is young and he has potential, but if I had a penny for every time I heard that about an Arsenal signing I would be set for life.

We need a strong solid defender who has experience and a household name. We don’t need any more players of who we can say, ‘oh he is definitely one for the future’. We need players who are ready to play from the word go, and in my opinion, Phil Jones is not that.

Wenger should be targeting more experienced options. He may be a good player for the future but do we need a player for the present. Arsenal must get experienced players, players who have proved it in the premiership and Europe.
