Is this ex-Arsenal defender simply stating what we already know?

Former Arsenal centre-back Sol Campbell recently told the Daily Mail that the Gunners ‘need to definitely get a goalkeeper and someone in the back-line’ this summer. Campbell goes on to say:

‘The centre-backs at the club are good footballers. It’s just transferring that into consistency, every game demands different things from each player. So Arsene Wenger might have to add a different type of defender into that area to handle certain games and help out next season. It’s good to have a variety at the back because every game throws up different things. Sometimes you need big-time players and he might have to go for a couple of older players who are bit savvy in the Premier League and can transfer it to Europe.’

The thing that gets me is that we all know this. It has been well documented in the past, and has been reported by nearly everybody that we need a keeper and a defender. I’m not saying to replace Wojciech Szczesny, but he needs competition for his spot.

Let’s not forget, the season finished just over two weeks or so ago and so far we have had a two or three former players come out and say exactly the same thing – we need to spend money.

I am sure it is not just me that sits there when another one of these article comes out and shouts ‘YES WE KNOW’. I am positive that Arsenal are going to sign a few players during the summer and Carl Jenkinson was just the first of many that will come in, but we never show all our cards early. There is a long time to go yet until the transfer window closes so let the professor do his job and get us the signings that we all know we need.

Sol Cambell does make a good point about not changing too much about the team though:

‘Hopefully Arsene Wenger can get a few players in, keep the key players he has got and not break the cycle. You want to keep a group of players together and then add to it.’

Now this is probably the best thing that Sol Campbell has said on the matter, purely because we do not want to bring in a bunch of players and change the whole dynamic of the squad.

Yes, we need to learn to shoot once in a while from distance, however, that will come with a striker who is confident in being able to hit the back of the net from outside the area. I say this because Robin van Persie has been injured quite a bit recently, and although he had a superb run when he came back to fitness, he needs to start his good form from the beginning next season.

In my opinion we just need to wait and see what happens. As I said earlier, last season just finished and Arsenal are not exactly known for making a lot of signings very early on so lets all just relax, take a deep breath and enjoy the lovely British summer!

Wenger knows what he is doing.
