The Connolly Column: Does Wenger truly know how ‘busy’ he’ll be this summer?

|

OMFG Arsene Wenger has said he’s going to be busy in the transfer market!!!

I’m not surprised. Do you know how long it would take me to flog a dead horse outside the Millennium Stadium? Neither do I, and I’m not going to attempt such a fruitless act just to satisfy your curiosity…ok my curiosity. Unless anyone has a spare dead horse? Oh right, yeah. Wenger does. To quote The Omniscient One, he states:

‘There will be some movement of players who have played less and who need to play.’

And further more:

‘We had a few important ones, but this [summer] will certainly be a big one on all fronts.’

And as if there’s not enough dissension amongst over sensitive disciples of Arsenal Football Club right now, a good ol’ stirring of the transfer speculation cauldron is a sure-fire way to arouse the bellicose. More rabid than a colony of Peruvian vampire bats, cantankerous souls are foaming at the mouth, baying for the blood of the incriminated.

But many mistakes are made in haste.

Let us first consider how long it would take to flog Denilson, for example. A player generally viewed as below the standard required by many. The Brazilian 23-year-old signed for £3.4 million back in 2006 at the age of 18. Which means Arsenal have invested five years of training, education, and personal development into Denny. Not to mention what the club must have paid in wages – a young man, who was ever present in the 2008/09 season, with his best years ahead of him. Many of the myopic amongst you would hastily, in theory, gratefully accept a nominal sum and escort the player to the nearest airport whilst doing the fandango. Wenger on the other hand, will be searching for a fee which more closely resembles that held in his own mind.

So, while it may be difficult and time consuming enough to flog a dead horse outside the Millennium Stadium, imagine if I were trying to flog that dead horse for £10 million?

Now imagine having to flog ten dead horses! Team Dead Horsi are going to be massive money spinners, eh?

    What a load of codswallop.

Hi Mick. All comments welcome, as usual. Just wondering if you have anything more constructive to add? Thanks.

Arsenal need Gary Cahill, Scott Parker, Ben Foster and a new left back if Clichy goes perhaps Leighton Bains. These would help the team immensely and get rid of the “we dont have any English players” tag. Parker and Foster are now championship players so would come quite cheep. Cahill will be expensive but worth it (I hope Liverpool get him!!!) and Bains will cost a respectable amount. Arsenal need some gritty English steel to go with their foreign flair and Cahill and the always outstanding Scott Parker would give them that. Also they really need a new keeper so would be foolish not to take advantage of Fosters situation at relegated Birmingham.

Good acrticle, really enjoyed reading it. I just hope Wenger will be very active in the transfer market. The fact is we need to get rid of players like Denilson, Squallaci and co and replace them with better squad players. If Fabregas, Nasri and Clichy leave then we need to replace them quality first team players, players like Baines, Hazard, Parker, Marin, Benzema or Bojan. Anyway what ever happens I hope Wenger get the players we need.

Good read, there are a load of player that arent cutting it as seen from lat season, it really shows because so few seemed to shine, we are not going to get back to ‘invincibles’ form in a hurry, but cup winning shouldnbt be as hard as wegner has made it..

Wenger will be busy, as to whether he can bring in what’s needed remains to be seen. I’m not confident he can be effective in the marketplace any longer. Wenger and his 30 professional scouts have not impressed these last several seasons.

real arsenal fans know arsenals problem aint there defence it they aint got 1 midfielder who defends even song thinks he an attacking player its a joke. if your defence is left vunerable constantley ur gonna concede, now watch switzerland vs spain world cup 2010. G,Inler had the job of stopping that spanish midfield and performed a masterclass
