Do Arsenal’s title hopes truly rest on Spurs result as Szczesny claims?

|

Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny has stated that failure to beat Tottenham at White hart Lane this Wednesday will all but kill off the Gunners title ambitions this season. The youngster couldn’t be more right.

Wenger’s men currently sit 6 points behind league leaders Manchester United, with 6 games left to play, following their dramatic 1-1 draw against Liverpool at the Emirates yesterday.

The Gunners blew a glorious chance to close the gap on United, but once again they failed to pick up all 3 precious points after conceding a 102nd minute penalty which Dirk Kuyt slotted home.

The disappointing draw not only dented Arsenal’s title hopes, but it has also left the North London club in danger of being caught by London rivals Chelsea, who are just 2 points behind in third place.

Arsenal have lost their last two previous Premier League meetings against Spurs, but Szczesny insists a win against their fierce rivals midweek will put them right back in the title hunt. The young Pole told the Sun today:

‘Of course we still believe we can win the title. We still have to play United and they also have to play Chelsea. They will drop points and we believe we’re good enough to win every game remaining.’

‘Tottenham is a very good match for us to come back from a big disappointment, and we owe it to the fans because they’re very disappointed about what happened against Liverpool. We owe them a result at White Hart Lane.’

‘The draw was a huge disappointment because with a minute to go we scored what we thought was a winning goal.’

‘We’re all gutted. It was a cheap penalty to give away whether it was one or not. We needed to win really badly to keep the pressure on United.’

The young goalkeeper finished off by saying:

‘We’re only thinking about winning the title, not who is behind us. We go into everything to finish first. We are Arsenal, we don’t want to finish second and we definitely don’t want to finish third.’

I love Szczesny’s enthusiasm and desire for the club. However, a win against Spurs this week will mean nothing (in terms of the title race anyway) if United bag all three points against Newcastle tomorrow night.

As I tweeted last night, after the dire draw to Liverpool, I am usually an optimistic Gooner, but yesterday was a huge blow for us, and was perhaps the day we handed the title over to Fergie’s men (sorry guys but it’s the truth). Don’t get me wrong, mathematically we could still do it, but our remaining fixture list looks a lot tougher than that of United’s.

In any case a win against ‘Arry’s side this Wednesday would put a huge smile back on my face, and ultimately, give us some form of bragging rights over Spurs this season.

I gald Szczesny believes we can still win the title, but I’m with the writer, I believe we lost the title against Liverpool. Arsenal have proved to me that they are not ready to win the premier leauge. We are not mentally ready to win it. I really hope I am proven wrong though but I don’t see it happening
