Pure arrogance, or simply pointing out the obvious? Messi on crunch clash with Arsenal

|

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi believes Arsenal’s Champions League adventure will come to an abrupt end, and claimed that the Catalans will be much more ruthless in front of goal when the two sides meet at the Camp Nou tomorrow night.

Wenger’s men will attempt to protect a slender 2-1 lead against the La Liga outfit, but Messi feels Arsenal’s attacking mentality will lead to their downfall in Spain. The Argentine, who netted four goals against the Gunners last season, said:

‘We remain confident of progressing. Obviously we were bitterly disappointed to lose the first leg at the Emirates and felt we created more than enough chances to win the game. But it will be a different story in Spain. I’m not sure Arsenal are a side who can play to defend – and that will leave them very open.’

The world’s number one player also added:

‘We are a side that will always create chances. It’s important for us to be clinical and ruthless in front of goal with so much at stake.’

‘Our elimination at the hands of Inter Milan last season has served to motivate us even more. We have not considered the prospect of elimination even after the first leg defeat against Arsenal.’

Even though some fans may perceive Messi’s comments as a little arrogant, in my opinion, the playmaker just seems confident, and in truth, makes valid points.

Firstly, he has every right to be confident of the upcoming clash at the Camp Nou, as we only hold a 1 goal advantage over them, and of course, due to what occurred last season.

Everyone, including Messi, knows that Arsenal are not a team who like to park the bus. Although this should be considered tomorrow, Arsenal will no doubt attempt to outplay the best passing team in the world, which evidently, as Messi stated, could potentially lead to their downfall.

I don’t believe for a second that Lionel Messi is trying to be disrespectful to Arsenal, nor arrogant. In my opinion, I just think he is extremely confident about his team’s chances tomorrow night, and rightly so, especially considering their home record this season (which is something quite exceptional, yet frightening to others) and of course Arsenal being without Alex Song and Theo Walcott.

However, I would like nothing more to see any player, including an Arsenal one, who chats to the media prior a massive game fall flat on his face. Let’s just hope we can get the result we all want tomorrow night.

Is Messi underestimating the Gunners chances? Have you say…

I always take these kind of comments with a pinch of salt, I think that when they’re translated they can often be taken out of context to spice things up. Whether they’re true or not though, you’re right in that there’s massive potential for players to fall flat on their faces. That’s why I want us to cane United, just to shut up Evra with his disrespectful remarks.

Messi is entitled to his opinion, even though it may look a little egotistical. He makes fair comments, and is correct when he says about Arsenal attacking Barca. If we do this we will receive a battering. I’m sure Arsenal can come away from this game with a positive result

I don’t think he is arrogant at all, he is only pointing out the obvious. I hope he is wrong though.
