THREE things I learnt about Arsenal last night

|

Last night was possibly one of the worst performances I have seen from Arsenal in a very long time. Having watched the game throughout its entirety, I noticed a number of things that were evidently clear (well at least to me anyway).

So, here are the 3 things I learnt from last night’s clash between Ipswich Town and Arsenal:

1. Does Wenger want to win a trophy?

In general, I don’t mind the Frenchman’s team selections. However, surely after three matches, in which Andrey Arshavin and Nicklas Bendtner have played, should indicate to Wenger that the two forward men are not starters at present. Arshavin has been in poor form as of late, whilst Bendtner’s contribution since getting back into the squad has been minimal, so why does Wenger insist on playing them?

Instead of starting with his strongest team, the Frenchman opted to play a ‘weaker’ Arsenal side against Ipswich. I understand that there are other competitions to play for, but realistically, the Carling Cup is probably the only trophy Arsenal can get their hands on this season. As a result of last night, Wenger must now play his strongest side for the return leg, which he undoubtedly did not envisage.

2. Lack of Desire

Arsenal’s lack of desire was clearly visible at Portman Road last night. Only one team wanted to win the game, and let me tell you, it wasn’t Wenger’s side. Ipswich showed the commitment and heart that is required to win games, and more importantly trophies. I saw a group of players in yellow and maroon attire that played as if nothing was at stake last night. Only Johan Djourou, Theo Walcott, Laurent Koscielny and Wojciech Szczesny played well, the rest were appalling, especially Cesc Fabregas. Arsenal must show more desire in the second leg, otherwise we could see yet another shock result.

3. Wenger must acquire new recruits

We clearly need a centre-back urgently. Without Thomas Vermaelen’s presence, Arsenal’s defensive line doesn’t look as solid as it should be. Judging by last night’s performance, I also think we need a left winger that can score and produce goals, because quite frankly, Andrey Arshavin is either in poor form or doesn’t care anymore. Splash the cash Wenger…we need reinforcements to succeed this season.

Arsenal were appalling, it really shocked me how badly some players played against a struggling Ipswitch, mind you on last night’s eveidence if Ipsitch keep on playing like that then I’m sure they will avoid relegation.

Arsenal lacked desire and passion, and Arshavin really surprized me, he is bad form and I thought a game against Ipsitch could get him out of his bad spell, but it just shows how bad he is as of late. If he keeps playing like that then Wenger should definately sell him. Oh yeah, that game also proved how rubbish Bendtner is, he absolutely did nothing for the team and he should be sold, simple as.

If this doesn’t prove to Wenger that we need players then I don’t know what will. We need strikers and defenders, but lets face it he won’t buy anyone so we’ll just have to get used to it.
