The Connolly Column: Has consistency become a modern myth?

|

We’ve all done it in recent seasons. If the team doesn’t go 10 games undefeated they are lambasted for being too inconsistent. Heads should roll, players X, Y, and Z should be shipped out which would provide us with twenty three trillion pounds.

With that cash we can bring in Eric Lionel Zidane, Paulo Chielleni Radabe and a young Peter Iker Seaman. That would guarantee us the double and another 11 years undefeated against those lily white S***s. What is the manager thinking? It’s that simple!

I accept that maybe a slight exaggeration. However, I’m sure we’ve at least once in our lives participated, if not instigated, such a conversation after a disappointing draw at home or a hard to swallow defeat on the road to a mid-table opposition. This sort of reaction is only becoming more and more common with the exponential growth of media influence in our lives, but that’s for another Sunday…

What I’d like to discuss in my first column, is the reaction to any result that isn’t a clear victory, especially against perceived lower opposition. Now I’m not naive enough to think this doesn’t happen at other clubs, but I couldn’t give a flying monkeys’ about other teams. Firstly, is a point at Wigan or Sunderland really a bad result? Is qualifying as runners-up in our Champions League group really a disaster? Do we have a divine right to win every home game of the season?

The era of one club dominating English football is well and truly over. The Premier League, and not forgetting the divisions immediately below, is far more competitive than ever before. Over half the season has already been played out and 12 teams are still looking over their shoulders for fear of going down, and five are still in the hunt for the Premier League title. Okay, Okay… Make that four clubs…

We have perhaps the best squad we have had since paddy left. Iur MF is stocked, and while people are complaining about the lack of a good DM, i think Rambo is that man. He is back, having no niggles unlike Diaby and Eduardo had. A lot of people are banging on about a new keeper, and i disagree. Dave Chezney-Schmichal is a beast between the posts, and Fabianski ever since that Champions League game where he saved a penno, has gone from strength to strength.

A lot of fans complained about not spanking a 10 man Wigan. Trust me when i say if Al-Habsi had not been on form, it would have been a cricket score. As a former Keeper, i can honestly say he had a phenominal game. Dispite RVP getting 3 goals, he was the undisputed MOTM.

Do i belive we will win the league? I don’t know. I think the cup double is a realistic aim, simply because You cant just go Jumping Straight for the top, when you dont have a winning mentallity. Can we beat Barca? Yes!

    Nice article, some good observations.

I tend to agree that in general the league is becoming more competitive. In years gone by at least 2, if not all 3 promoted clubs were a dead cert for a quick relegation….that doesnt seem to be the case so much these days. (Thats good news for me – Im a Cardiff fan)

Im not sure if football is as far along the line (regarding competitiveness) as you suggest it is however…the title looks like its going to go to one of the three clubs that have had a monopoly on it since 1996, and despite Man Cities recent appearance on the scene, I cant really see that picture changing much in the next couple of seasons.

PS cheers for Rambo, we will look after him!

In whole I love this article, it made me laugh throughout, but you also brought up some valid points.

But I do agree with the fact that the league is getting stronger and stronger and it definately looks like all the promoted teams will avoid relegation. I also don’t think Utd will ramain unbeaten all season as it seems they are getting lucky results at the moment, and I think eventually there luck will run out.

We have got great squad depth and I can see us going all the way in some competitions. I hope arsenal can win everything but I think we could do the double or dare I say a domestic treble. I don’t think we have a chance of winning the champions league as Barca look too strong, if we beat them it will be fantastic but if we lose at least we’ll lose to the best.
