Are we seeing a new Alex Song this season?

|

I would have never believed that in the first week of January 2011, Arsenal’s Alex Song would be two goals behind Liverpool’s Fernando Torres in the Premier League goal-scoring chart.

Who in their right mind would have expected the boy from Douala (Cameroon) to have bagged 5 goals already this season? I sure didn’t, especially looking at his record in the past five seasons at Arsenal.

Together with the super growth of Samir Nasri, Theo Walcott and the tenacious Jack Wilshere, Song’s improvement has been evident in every part of the pitch.

In my opinion, the 23-year-old plays his midfield role excellently. He has formed a great chemistry with Cesc Fabregas and Wilshere in the middle of the park, and has now implemented a more offensive approach to his game which is great to see.

This has of course forced Arsene Wenger to reconsider the midfield trio’s mentality and approach to the game. Whilst Fabregas seems to have a free role in the centre, it now appears that Wilshere is the designated holding midfielder, leaving Song to be known as a box-to-box player in the Arsenal line-up.

The midfielder’s goal against Chelsea (his fifth of the season) 9 days ago speaks volumes of what the guy has implemented into his game. Song showed great awareness and drive to finish off a one-two move with Jack Wilshere, in which the Cameroon international charged through the defence and slotted home, from a tight angle, Arsenal’s first of three that night.

However, having watched him play this season, one must ask, is there any room for improvement? Of course there is. His disciplinary record could, and should be a lot better. He has already managed to rack up three yellow cards, and also a red one, which must be looked at and worked on in the future. At times, Song’s challenges leave the officials no choice but to caution him. The midfielder must work on his timing when going into challenges, and especially cut down on the unnecessary, yet clumsy fouls.

Apart from this, in my opinion, Song looks happy with the job Wenger has given him this season. He seems more comfortable and assured with his role, and with the addition of goals this season, the midfielder can only get better with time. Let’s hope that his good performances continue.

Song has been immense this season and i agree with the fact that he has become a box to box player. He has scored some important goals for us and always performs. Definately one of Arsenal’s most improved players.
