No room, but if there was, would Beckham be an ideal signing for Arsenal?

|

Arsene Wenger admitted yesterday that he would jump at the chance of signing David Beckham this winter. However, the Frenchman believes there is no room for the L.A Galaxy midfielder.

It’s a fair, and more importantly, accurate statement from the Gunners chief about the England international. Although, if there was room for him in the Arsenal squad for Beckham, would he be a good signing for the club?

Wenger is a huge admirer of the 35-year-old and has, in the past, invited the former Manchester United star to train with the Arsenal squad to maintain his fitness during the MLS season break.

Beckham’s season with L.A Galaxy has now come to an end and is seeking yet another loan spell with a top European club. A.C Milan are thought to be interested in Beckham’s services once again, following two successful spells in the past at the Serie A side. However, it seems the Emirates Stadium is not a destination for him this winter, even though Wenger is keen on the player. The Frenchman told Arsenal.com:

‘Of course I would consider signing Beckham but it’s in an area where we do not need players. We have Walcott, Nasri, Rosicky, Arshavin, Vela and Eboue who can play on the flanks.’

Wenger reiterated his admiration for the former Real Madrid man, but has stated that he will not be signing him this January:

’I love David Beckham and when he was here [training] he was a fantastic example on the professional side. He was the first in and the last out, but I cannot sign anybody in January in the department where he plays.’

David Beckham is probably the most professional footballer left out there, despite his ridiculous wages. Even with his celebrity lifestyle and previous personal problems, the England international has kept his head down, and most importantly, concentrated on his football.

Wenger is probably right in his assessment over Beckham’s chances of getting into the current Arsenal team. But, even if the club needed a player in his designated position, surely Wenger could find a better option than David Beckham in the market?

I am not implying that Englishman is a bad footballer, because the fact is, even at his age, Beckham possesses some great ability and has bags of experience under his belt. However, even at his age, I feel he could have played a cameo style role for the club. Although, knowing Beckham, he wouldn’t want this.

Personally, I’m glad Wenger has ruled himself out of signing Beckham this winter. I believe we have better options available to us within our current squad, as well as in the transfer market…if of course we required a player in the specified position.

What do you guys think – Is Wenger right not to approach David Beckham this January?

I think Beckham was a quality player and still maybe a quality player. He is an absolute legend and definately deserves to be on loan for a top team. I think Wenger is right though, we have too many top quality players in his position so even if he were to come to Arsenal I don’t see him starting, and a player like that deserves to play week in week out. I hope he gets his loan spell at a top club because he deserves it.
