Arsene WengerArsene Wenger might have just finished his transfer dealings this month.

The Frenchman finally completed the signing of midfielder Mohamed Elneny for a reported fee of £5 million from Basel yesterday afternoon after work permit issues were resolved.

The Gunners have been linked with moves for a number of players this month and is supposedly keen to add a new forward to this squad before the window closes, with Dortmund’s Piere-Emerick Aubameyang in mind.

However, Wenger has poured cold water over making a swoop for any other player this month by hinting that he will not be getting his cheque book out again.

When asked if there will be anymore additions this month following the arrival of Elneny, the Frenchman said:

‘I would prefer to have the players back from injuries.

‘Welbeck is two to three weeks away and I am confident I will not find a better player than Welbeck on the market.’

These comments may upset and frustrate a majority of the Arsenal faithful, but it was expected.

Alexis Sanchez looks to be back in contention, while we already have Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud to choose from. And with Welbeck only a couple of weeks away, the Gunners should be able to manage until then. So a move for a striker this month looks to be the correct decision.

However, some will question Wenger’s decision to possible strengthen elsewhere, like the defence. Perhaps a move – loan or permanent – for a centre-back would be ideal, just in case we so happen to suffer injuries in this department.

Let’s just hope Wenger’s decision to close his cheque book so early doesn’t come back to haunt him.
