Why did we even sign him?

VivianoMany are talking about who Arsenal should sign this January, with another striker desperately needed following injuries to Nicklas Bendtner and TheoWalcott.

But I would like to divert away from that for a minute and ask a question which may leave some of you puzzled.

Arsene Wenger opted to drop Wojciech Szczesny for the FA Cup game against Spurs last Saturday and instead gave Lukasz Fabianski another chance to prove his worth. Having seen this, I just want to ask – why was Emiliano Viviano brought in last summer from Italy?

The Italian joined on a season-long loan from Palermo, with the thought of him actually challenging Szczesny for the gloves and allowing Fabianski, if he wanted to, to leave the Emirates.

However, we have yet to see the 28-year-old feature for us so far this season, not even in the Capital One Cup! Worse still, Viviano has, at times, failed to make the bench! And having not been picked in our last game against Spurs, reports claim Viviano is unsettled and could quit Arsenal this month, with AC Milan and Bologna alerted of his situation.

Signed on a season-long loan with an option to buy at the end of the campaign, but for what? I just don’t get it, and I actually feel a little sorry for Viviano because he’s actually not bad a goalkeeper.

But with the World Cup only five months away, Viviano will want to get some game time under his belt if he wants to be considered for selection.

Fabianski looks like he’s staying put this January, so Wenger might as well relieve Viviano of his duty at Arsenal.

We signed him so we would have a back up goalie if Szczesny or Fabianski got injured. Without Viviano, if Szczesny got an injury and was out for a month or so, Fabianski would play and we would have no one on the bench. Viviano is only a loanee to cover third goalie slot. Damian Matinez our youth goalie has gone out on loan and is more likely to get games where he is then here at Arsenal.

When we signed him nobody could have invisaged the way Scezny would play this season after last seasons calamitous displays. Whatever the reason it worked to bring the best out of him , apart from the clanger v west ham he has been outstanding all year.
Unfortunate for viviano but thats the way it goes

I thought this was going to be about the Park guy…

  • Jason says:

Another question regarding park is how many shirts did we move?

  • H says:

Hahaha Park, what a joke. Thought he was off our books you know.

As for Viviano. He’s just been unfortunate that Shezza is playing so well and consistent. But I dont get why he hasnt played a game for us yet. Probs won’t now you know

  • Jason says:

Maybe that’s why he is playing so well, bit of competition for the gloves

  • H says:

    Perhaps you’re right Jason.

Jus gald to see Shezza doin well and I dont see Viv’s deal turn into a permanent one after his loan period
