No risk in this potential deal

dimitar berbatovA week ago or so, Perry Groves labelled it a ‘no-brainer’, while Stewart Robson recently stated that the man in question could help Arsenal land the Premier League title this season. And with a reported £2 million move on the cards this month, should Arsene Wenger actually go for Dimitar Berbatov?

The Bulgarian striker is believed to be unhappy at Fulham and with only six months left to run on his existing deal at Craven Cottage, Berbatov could be bought for as little as £2 million this month.

Yes, we all know he can be lazy at times, but we also know that when he’s on it, he’s on it and a class act. Wherever he’s played he’s scored goals and, more importantly, Berbatov already has a wealth of Premier League experience under his belt and has the winning mentality having won major trophies in the past for Manchester United.

We all saw in yesterday’s game against Cardiff that we need to strengthen our front-line. When Olivier Giroud is not performing we have no-one to fall back on, and that’s worrying. Despite scoring yesterday, we simply cannot rely on Nicklas Bendtner to find the back of the net week in, week out.

I’m not saying Berbatov is the missing piece of the puzzle by any means, but the Bulgarian can give us the depth upfront that we’ve been lacking this season. And for just £2 million, I can’t see why we shouldn’t go for him.

In my opinion, there is no risk in this potential deal. Even if we were to only sign him for a season or two, parting ways with just £2 million for a proven and classy (when firing on all cylinders) striker makes for a good piece of business.

I, like many of you reading this, would obviously love to see the likes of Luis Suarez or Diego Costa join the club this January, but we also have to be realistic about signing players of this calibre (especially this season). And Berbatov for £2 million looks realistic this month and a type of deal Wenger would drool over all day long.
