Why I’m glad Arsenal handed this man a new deal?

As we all know, Tomas Rosicky was recently rewarded a new deal by Arsenal.

The 31-year-old, who has enjoyed some fantastic games as of late, had just six-months left to run on his original contract and much to most fans delight he is going to remain at the club for at least two more seasons. I for one am surprised that Arsenal have not learnt from previous mistakes. Letting Rosicky’s contract come down to the six-month period was pretty risky and I know that questions are going to be asked about why it keeps happening.

Rosicky said:

‘Arsenal let me get to the point where I had just half-a-year on my contract and could talk to anyone I wanted. It started to get interesting because I had very lucrative offers. This turned my head a little, but I have to say that Arsenal were my priority.’

Rosicky went on to elaborate about the big money offers and explained that they had come from Russia and China:

‘In both cases, it was financially huge numbers, so that somehow you had to entertain it – it’s not easy. Some days I thought about it, but money is not everything.’

A lot has been said about the Czech signing a new deal and some papers even stated that the only reason he has been playing well was to entertain a new contract.

In my opinion, the midfield maestro just isn’t the kind of player to play for a new deal. You can see how he plays with passion and heart and is enjoying being at the club. Rosicky decided to set the record straight:

‘I want to say that what was sometimes written, that I have played better because I’m fighting for a contract, had nothing to do with it. Although it is now signed, it was just a matter of preparing the paperwork. I had given my word to the coach that I would stay much earlier.’

Personally, I’m glad that Rosicky has committed his future to Arsenal. I think regardless of what happens the Czech international is capable of reading the flow of the game and will be very useful, especially if he can continue his run of form.

Was it a good move keeping him at Arsenal? In my opinion, yes it was.

He has been brilliant and it keeps us having a mixture of youth and experience in the side which a club needs.

Was the contract well handled? Not in my opinion. A player shouldn’t be allowed to get to the six-month stage before trying to negotiate a new deal. Arsenal need to learn from this sooner rather than later.
