Ex-Gunner Stewart Robson has warned Arsene Wenger that Arsenal will struggle to finish in the top six, if he doesn’t motivate his players to work harder defensively.

Arsenal have already lost 3 Premier League games this season, which include two humiliating defeats to Manchester United and Blackburn which saw the Gunners concede 12 goals, and notch up only 4 points from 5 games.

Robson recently told talkSPORT that Wenger has to admit things are going wrong at the club and rectify them before they get into even more trouble.

The former midfielder said:

‘The players follow his manner. When he is upbeat and smiling and confident the players show that on the field.’

‘When he looks under pressure the players take that onto the pitch and that is something he has to look at.’

‘Arsene Wenger has got to take a long, hard look at himself for a longer period than just this season.’

Robson added:

‘The last four or five years people have seen what’s going wrong and it looks at times that Arsene Wenger won’t admit things are going wrong.’

‘When they were five points clear at the top of the league and Eduardo had his injury at Birmingham that was the time when Arsenal could have won the league.’

‘The players follow his manner. When he is upbeat and smiling and confident the players show that on the field. When he looks under pressure the players take that onto the pitch and that is something he has to look at.’

‘He has got to somehow motivate the players, he has got to get them to work harder defensively and if he can do that, Arsenal have got every chance of being in the top four, if he doesn’t do that Arsenal will be lucky to get in the top six.’

Robson makes a very strong point in my opinion, someone needs to wake Wenger up and make him critically asses what’s happening defensively.

Too many own goals have been conceded early on this season, not to mention our frailties from set-pieces that still give us problems. The concentration of our defenders at times is lacking, sometimes its there but we need it to be consistent.

We are only a point above the relegation zone, but hopefully we won’t be there too long, providing we stop conceding needless goals or outscoring our opponents from here on in.
