Wenger claims top four finish is not guaranteed next season – Is he right?

|

Arsene Wenger has warned Arsenal fans that a top four finish next season is not guaranteed.

This is the last thing we wanted to hear. As if suffering a season of failure wasn’t bad enough, and the board also deeming it right to increase ticket prices by 6.5%, Wenger now comes out and states there is no guarantee of a top four finish next season. What does he think he is playing at?

When every Arsenal fan around the world is crying out for silverware, is this really the correct way to respond to your followers?

Arsenal are not a mid-table side who have one great season once every decade like Tottenham or Liverpool. We have been one of the most consistent sides in the Premier League in years and a place outside the top four, given that we don’t win trophies, is like being relegated. Wenger told several national newspapers and online publications:

‘People take it for granted that we are in there every year but, believe me, it is hard work. You have clubs like Liverpool who are out of it at present, and Tottenham were a big candidate this season.’

Correct. Everyone knows that it is hard work to acquire a top four finish, especially given the way clubs evolve. Finishing in a Champions League spot season after season is a very credible achievement. Wenger has to be lauded for his consistency at the top since taking charge of the North London club in 1996. However, a majority of Arsenal fans want silverware to return to the club. The fact that the Gunners finish year after year within the top four and compete in the illustrious Champions League merely gives us something to cheer about. But should we not achieve this, then surely the clubs credibility and reputation will fall (just look at what’s happened to Liverpool, and recently Tottenham).

So, I feel it only right that we have a look at who our challengers are for a top four finish next season:

Manchester United: A team in the rebuilding phase, but will surely obtain a place within the top-four next season despite the retirement of Edwin van der Sar.

Chelsea: They will want to splash the cash, but the new UEFA financial fair play rules will cripple them to an extent. However, they have the team spirit and fight to once again occupy a spot in the top four, even if they are an aging team.

Manchester City: With Champions League football to look forward to, and cash to splash, you can’t look past City to claim a top four finish. There will be a lot of movement both in and out this summer at the club, but they can only get stronger with time.

wenger speaks utter verbal diahorea, from these comments i come to the conclusion dont expect much from transfers this summer, can one imagine feguson coming out and saying man utd are going to find it hard to be in the top 4 next year !! i dont think so this man has negative approach to the squad with these comments and he should leave now, his words are like cancer spreading right through the team, and the fans, also i think kroenke should go to he is not interested in arsenal success he is interested in lining his own pocket and that of the shareholders, hence why they put up the price of tickets the highest in this country then wenger is now saying dont expect top 4 next year, why should anybody pay to watch then a team that he is saying is going to win nothing next season !! i might as well and go and pay to watch a team in the lower leagues at least you know you get to see a good game with players committed, to me it seems disturbing the pat rice thing, wengers comments what is really going on behind the marbel walls of highbury? because it is evident by wengers comments they will not be challenging for anything next season it really shows then where kroenke is going

I think the time is right for AW to go upstairs running the club from a business point of view, when we can get the right man to coach the winning mentality in the players.
For me , it has to be Muirino if and when he leaves Real Madrid. Many say he’s not the kind of man they want to represent the Arsenal football club but I think he’s the perfect man for the job right now. He is a winner, we all know that.
He is a fighter for his club and his players.
He will instill the missing qualities in the players to be winners and chop out the dead wood. Presently the current players have had it to easy for a couple of seasons now.
I have Questioned the Board and AW methods.
Our problems started when they sacked Dein because he had has a vision to make Arsenal a top top club, but the other board members only interested in making bags of money for themselves.
AW should of kept Ashley Cole, Flamini and Diarra, all that have the fighting spirit. It is right that we should have a British backbone in the Sqaud, let alone the team. The scouting system is currently very poor and needs 21st century restructuring.
    I could go on.
    GOONER FOR LIFE!

We are struggling to hold some of our best players and Wenger comes out with a comment like this. He is absolutely stupid our manager. Players and fans don’t want to hear this, if he believes this so much then he needs to splash the cash to ensure we make the top four next season. Another reason to splash the cash is to show the fans the clubs intent of winning things. If he spends wising and brings in the right players, you never know the players who want to leave might change their minds and stay. I say this because seeing that happen will show to the players how serious they are on winning trophies.
