Title-chasing Arsenal should win easily
Arsenal’s emphatic 4-1 victory in the reverse fixture in November highlighted the massive disparity between the two clubs at the moment.
The Gunners are mounting a strong bid to win the title this season, while Spurs are looking nervously over their shoulders at the relegation zone.
The club’s decision to sack manager Ange Postecoglou last summer and replace him with Thomas Frank did not work out as they expected.
Postecoglou guided Tottenham to the Europa League title last term, but poor performances in domestic competitions resulted in his dismissal.
Frank never looked the right fit for Spurs from the outset and he failed to improve their fortunes. New interim manager Igor Tudor looks to be an equally questionable appointment.
Tudor has inherited a squad which not only lacks quality, but is also light on numbers due to a sizeable injury list. Those factors will delight Arsenal heading into the game.
The Gunners are four points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table with 12 games remaining and on course to win the title for the first time since 2003/04.
Manager Mikel Arteta has overseen an impressive campaign at the club, and will be desperate to ensure they fend off their title rivals on the run-in.
Arsenal have also been impacted by injuries this season, but their greater strength in depth has allowed them to navigate their way safely through any issues.
Matin Odegaard could be back in the squad on Sunday after missing the FA Cup fourth round victory over Wigan Athletic last Sunday.
The captain hurt his knee during Thursday’s 1-1 draw against Brentford, but subsequently allayed fears that he could sidelined for a few weeks.
In Arsenal’s matchday programme for the Wigan game, Odegaard wrote: “I picked up a bit of an injury when they [Brentford] scored their goal, but hopefully it’s not too bad.
“We’ll see how it goes in the build-up to today’s game and over the next few days. I tried to clear the ball as it came down, but instead kicked into the player a bit, and ended up over-stretching my leg, which pinched the knee.
“I was able to carry on, but on Friday morning it was very sore, so I was worried of course, but thankfully it looks like it’s not too bad.”
Odegaard’s potential return to action at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would be a major boost for Arsenal heading into a critical part of the title race.
The Gunners still have to visit Man City during April, so will be eager to at least main the current points advantage they hold at the top of the standings.
While Pep Guardiola’s side have not been at their brilliant best this season, they have kept themselves within touching distance of Arsenal with one-third of the season remaining.
City have several winnable games scheduled before they face the Gunners, which could boost their chances of narrowing the gap over the next few weeks.
However, Arsenal have developed more mental fortitude this term, which should stand them in good stead as the title battle intensifies.
The club will never have a better opportunity to end their title drought and winning at Tottenham would be the perfect way to demonstrate their credentials.
