The agent of Lucas Torreira says the player’s future is in Mikel Arteta’s hands after the midfielder continues to be linked with a return to Serie A.

Torreira has been linked with a move away from the Emirates this summer with Roma, AC Milan and most recently Fiorentina linked with his services.

Reports in Italy claimed this week that the Gunners have informed Fiorentina and every other club interested that the 24-year-old could be available for £27million.

Torreira was in and out of Arteta’s side last season, starting just 23 of his 39 appearances in all competitions mainly due to injury problems, but the Uruguayan has struggled to replicate his debut form at the Emirates. Now the player’s agent, Pablo Bentancur, has made it clear that the ball is in Arsenal’s court regarding the midfielder’s future.

Speaking to CalcioMercato, Bentancur said:

“There are many requests, but still nothing official.

“I have received many surveys, even too publicized, but we have nothing written on the table. The player is training with Arsenal, is their property, and is one of the few cases of players coming to England and playing 50 games in a row.

“After he had a bad injury, he didn’t have to undergo surgery but the return was a bit complicated. The coach has to make a technical choice, and he has to decide if he really needs Torreira or not, but all this the press talks about is more publicity than reality. Today the market is a bit stagnant…”

It remains to be seen whether Arteta sees Torreira in his plans this season but with the club already conducting business in the transfer market and being linked with other central midfielders, the future of the Uruguayan looks in doubt.
