Jerome Boateng has emerged as a transfer target for Arsenal, according to reports in Italy.

Bayern Munich were close to selling the 31-year-old in January, when the Gunners were believed to be keen on his services, but he opted to remain at the Bundesliga club for rotation purposes.

However, the German centre-back’s future will once again be in question once the current season ends with just one year left to run on his contract at Bayern.

Italian publication FootMercato now claim Boateng could be allowed to leave with Arsenal and Chelsea just two of several Premier League clubs interested.

With the futures of Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis and Pablo Mari in doubt, Mikel Arteta will be keen to improve and add depth to his backline and has already been linked with several defenders in recent weeks to replace those supposedly on their way out of the Emirates this summer.

William Saliba will return to Arsenal at the end of his loan spell at Saint-Etienne this summer and Arteta will also have Calum Chambers back in contention when he returns from his injury. But the Gunners will need more experience in the defensive department and see Boateng as a suitable candidate for the job.
