Arsenal may have suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City on Sunday but there were some positives to take from the performance.

The display of 19-year-old Matteo Guendouzi caught the eye, as the France midfielder signed from the second-division in his home nation impressed many – including Arsenal veteran Petr Cech.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Cech, named as one of Arsenal’s captains this season, praised Guendouzi for his impressive displays since joining the squad during the summer.

“He’s a very talented player and he had an unbelievable pre-season for a boy who comes from the second division [in France]. It’s a big difference and throughout the pre-season I think he deserved his spot in the starting XI for his work and the quality that he put on the pitch. He had a difficult task but I thought that he did really well.”

Guendouzi faces a challenge to retain his spot for this weekend’s trip to face Chelsea, as fellow new recruit Lucas Torreira is pushing for a start after coming off the bench to make his debut.
