Arsenal’s campaign under Unai Emery did not get off to the best of starts on Sunday, as the Gunners suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City.

An opening game against the defending Premier League champions was never going to be an easy task for the north London giants though and one debutant in particular caught the eye, despite being the least known of Arsenal’s five senior summer signings.

19-year-old Matteo Guendouzi started in midfield for the Gunners and impressed with his performance against the Citizens, earning widespread praise from fans, pundits and even some of his senior team-mates.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright is the latest to praise the young central midfielder, explaining to The Sun what impressed him the most.

“Yes, he found it tough going at times against City but what impressed me was his attitude and effervescence. It would have been easy to hide — let’s face it, others in the Arsenal side did — but he was still demanding the ball, still showing and still battling to the end.”
