Arsenal face a challenge to retain the services of experienced full-back Nacho Monreal, after the Spain international was reportedly approached by a club in his homeland.

The Daily Mirror state Monreal has emerged as a target for Real Sociedad after the Basque side lost the services of Alvaro Odriozola, who sealed a move to European champions Real Madrid following Spain’s World Cup campaign.

Monreal, 32, was one of Arsenal’s best performers last season but Real Sociedad are eyeing an ambitious move to bring the veteran to the club and have money to spend following Odriozola’s sale – although there is no indication the Gunners want to sell.

Unai Emery has already bolstered his defensive ranks with the signings of Stephan Lichtsteiner, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and goalkeeper Bernd Leno this summer but the fact he has not made moves for a left-back suggests that Monreal still has a future at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal do still have Sead Kolasinac as an option on the left-side, following his free transfer from Schalke last year, but Monreal was the first-choice last term.
