Unai Emery’s plans to finalise his transfer market activity at Arsenal have been handed a blow following the emergence of a European giant in the hunt for his prime transfer target.

The Daily Mirror states that Barcelona have expressed an interest in signing World Cup winning midfielder Steven N’Zonzi from Sevilla after seeing their advances for Paris Saint-Germain’s Adrien Rabiot rebuffed.

A deal for 29-year-old N’Zonzi is considered to be easier to complete due to his £40m price-tag, a figure that Arsenal have been reluctant to meet despite Emery’s desire to reunite with a player who starred for him during his spell in Andalusia.

Formerly of Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers, N’Zonzi is understood to be keen on a return to the Premier League but Arsenal’s stance that they won’t pay such a high figure for a player approaching his 30’s puts a potential transfer in jeopardy.

Barcelona could then take advantage of the situation by swooping under the Gunners’ nose to land a deal.
