Arsenal continue to eye midfield recruits following the departures of Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla, who both left on free transfers when their deals expired at the end of June.

The Gunners could benefit in similar circumstances though as they remain interested in Germany international Max Meyer, TuttoMercatoWeb report, who left Schalke last month when his contract with the Bundesliga side expired.

Arsenal, alongside Liverpool, are said to be fighting for the services of the highly-rated 22-year-old who could be seen as the long-term replacement for compatriot Mesut Ozil, though his reported wage demands of £85k-a-week are putting both Premier League sides off.

While Arsenal are notoriously strict with their wage structure, the recent departures of Cazorla and Wilshere mean the Gunners have cash to spend in this area and the fact that TransferMarkt values Meyer at £16.2m means that Emery’s side will save money and have room for profit if they decide to sell later down the line.
