New Arsenal boss Unai Emery is looking to assemble a side capable of fighting for significant honours at the Emirates Stadium next season and it could see him target further attacking additions.

The Gunners have significantly improved their ranks in the final third during the past 12 months, signing Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan – as well as securing Mesut Ozil to a lucrative new contract.

However, some still believe that Arsenal have failed to adequately replace Alexis Sanchez following his January transfer to Manchester United and a report suggests that the Gunners are pushing to fill that void.

Portuguese outlet O Jogo states Arsenal are battling serial Italian champions Juventus for the services of Sporting Lisbon’s highly-rated winger Gelson Martins, who scored 13 goals and provided 13 assists in the league last term.

The 23-year-old has a reported release-clause worth in excess of £50m in his contract with the third-placed side but an exit could be on the cards, after a series of shocking incidents for the Portuguese giants this season – which includes fans storming the training ground and attacking players.

As such, a number of departures are expected to take place this summer and, although Sporting want to keep him, Gelson Martins could be one of those pushing for an exit.
