Arsenal have plenty of work to do in the close season to improve their underperforming side and plenty of attention is likely to be focused on the club’s defensive ranks, after concerning displays this term.

The Gunners’ back-line was called into criticism again after last night’s 2-2 draw with CSKA Moscow, as lacklustre defending allowed the Russian to put themselves on the brink of a remarkable comeback- until Danny Welbeck and Aaron Ramsey hit back.

With captain Per Mertesacker due to retire in just a few months, the need for an experienced defensive addition is clear but Arsenal have been handed a major blow in the market, as West Brom’s Jonny Evans is poised to snub a move.

The Daily Mirror states Evans, who has a release-clause of just £3m if the Baggies are relegated, will reject the chance to move to the Emirates Stadium and is instead holding out for a transfer to join Premier League champions elect Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side, along with Arsenal, were linked with Evans’ services during the January transfer window but the Citizens signing Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao instead, raising questions as to whether there is still room for Evans in the squad.
