Arsenal have plenty of work to do this summer as the Gunners are set to miss out on a top-four Premier League finish for the second campaign in a row, raising speculation on the future of core members of their squad.

With Per Mertesacker due to retire in just a few months time, taking a role with the academy, Arsenal will need to bolster their defensive ranks and reports suggest that the north London side are keen on landing another highly-rated defensive target.

The player in question in Stevenage’s Ben Wilmot, an 18-year-old who has broken into the first-team this season and has become subject of interest from a number of sides within the Premier League, including Arsenal’s arch-rivals Tottenham.

However, The Sun hands Arsenal a boost as it’s stated that Watford, who saw a £500k approach rejected in January, have ended their pursuit for the defender’s services, leaving the door open for Arsene Wenger’s side to seal a deal.

It’s not clear where exactly Wilmot would fit at Arsenal, considering the Gunners still have Shkodran Mustafi, Laurent Koscielny, Calum Chambers and Rob Holding in the squad, whilst they signed 20-year-old Konstantinos Mavropanos in January.
