Arsenal know they have work to do in the summer transfer market and a major rebuild is likely to occur defensively, after a disappointing Premier League campaign.
The Gunners are poised to lose veteran captain Per Mertesacker at the end of his contract, with the World Cup winner set to take a coaching role with the academy, and that’s left Arsene Wenger’s side in the hunt for an addition at the heart of defence.
According to reports cited by The Sun, Arsenal are looking to capture another ace from Borussia Dortmund as the north London side are eyeing a move for Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
The 29-year-old, rated at £25m, is reportedly keen to leave the Bundesliga side in search of a new challenge and may have the opportunity to reunite with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan at the Emirates Stadium.
Competition for Sokratis is likely to be fierce though, as Chelsea, Juventus and Manchester United are all attributed with an interest.
