Arsenal’s search for reinforcements this summer could prove to be very costly in the transfer market, with top-class players fetching a premium price in modern football.

The Gunners are likely to be looking for defensive additions this summer following another disappointing campaign, particularly with veteran captain Per Mertesacker set to hang up his boots to take a role with the academy.

Whilst you may expect Arsenal to sign an experienced defender, as the club already boast the talents of Calum Chambers, Rob Holding and Konstantinos Mavropanos, it seems the Gunners are happy to land another youngster.

Reports from Portugal cited by Sports Witness state that Arsenal have been tracking Benfica defender Ruben Dias this season and the Portuguese side are ready to sell this summer, reportedly already searching for replacements.

The 20-year-old has earned a stellar reputation following his rise for Benfica, making 19 appearances and scoring three goals this season, but would prove to be a costly addition as his club are eyeing a fee of at least €40m for his services.

Dias’ contract with Benfica includes a release-clause of €60m, which means the club’s price-tag isn’t unrealistic, but it remains to be seen whether Arsenal would splash such a vast amount on the youngster.
