Barcelona remain firmly in the race to sign Schalke midfielder Max Meyer, according to Sport.

The Catalan publication reports the signing of Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool has not deterred them from pursuing a move for the German international.

Meyer is available on a free transfer in the summer, with his contract expiring in June, and Arsenal are also said to be keeping a close eye on the midfield anchor man’s situation.

Schalke’s sporting director Christian Heidel revealed yesterday that the club are expecting a response from the midfielder about his future “soon.”

Meyer can sign a pre-contract agreement with any club he wishes, but Schalke will be determined to keep him after already losing another key player in Leon Goretzka to Bayern Munich.

Reports in Germany suggest Schalke have offered the 22 year old £93,000 a week to stay in the Bundesliga. Whether that will be enough to resist the likes of the Gunners or Barcelona, we will have to wait and see.
