Arsenal are undergoing a major redevelopment in 2018 and further changes are expected this summer, when the north London side could rejuvenate their defensive line.

The Gunners are poised to lose captain Per Mertesacker, who is set to retire and take a coaching role with the academy, and Arsene Wenger’s side seem intent on finding the ideal long-term replacement for the World Cup winner.

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo now claims that Arsenal are one of three Premier League sides in talks to land Ajax starlet Matthijs De Ligt, with Manchester United and Manchester City also eyeing the 18-year-old.

Having developed from Ajax’s prestigious academy, De Ligt has already earned a wealth of experience in the Eredivisie and has been capped by Holland’s senior side despite his tender age- and he’s widely regarded as one of the best defensive talents in Europe.

Interest in De Ligt is also coming from Barcelona and Bayern Munich but Arsenal could use their links with the Dutch side to push their way to the front of the queue, as former Gunners Marc Overmars and Dennis Bergkamp are now key figures at Ajax.
