Arsenal are looking to bolster their frail defensive line in the summer transfer window and have eyed an exciting swoop, according to reports.

The Gunners are poised to lose Per Mertesacker in the coming months, with the World Cup winner retiring to take a coaching role in North London, and further depth is required- although it raises questions regarding the future of Calum Chambers and Rob Holding.

Both youngsters have struggled for consistent game time this season and would have hoped for further opportunities in the post-Mertesacker era. However, The Sun instead claims Arsenal are fighting for the services of Juventus defender Daniele Rugani.

The 23-year-old Italian is regarded as one of the brightest defensive prospects within Serie A but has struggled for playing time this season due to immense competition and could seek an exit this summer.

Rugani’s agent, Davide Torchia, revealed that a number of side are interested in his client’s services- and stated talks with Arsenal were held in previous years.

“Rugani is an international player. He could play in any league. So also in U.K. He’s young. Elegant in the way of playing. I know that various top European top club follow him.”

“Some are English. Arsenal? In the past, some seasons ago, we spoke with them. At the moment there are no official contact with them.”

Arsenal do still have Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi in their ranks but the former is in the twilight years of his career, whilst Mustafi has struggled for consistency since his return to the Premier League.
