Schalke midfielder Max Meyer could be heading to Bayern Munich on a free transfer, much like his team mate Leon Goretzka, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Catalan publication reports Schalke’s sporting director Christian Heidel already fears that Bayern have swooped in for a another one of his players, and in a desperate attempt to keep him, he has offered a sizeable wage rise.

Sport Bild reported last week that the offer was €5.5m a season, or £94,000 a week, and that the player was weighing up offers from eight other clubs, including Arsenal and Barcelona.

However, Mundo Deportivo report that Meyer has already made up his mind, and that he wants to join Bayern. Barca have therefore withdrawn from the race for the 22 year old as they don’t see the point of continuing.

They say the player’s agent is not being as forthcoming about Meyer’s decision, and that he wants to auction the player in order to increase their bargaining position in contract negotiations with Bayern. Whether that is actually the case, we will have to wait and see.
