Tottenham are in pole position to sign Juventus centre back Daniele Rugani, according to the Corriere Torino (via TMW).

Arsenal have been tracking the 23 year old for a number of years, and had been tipped in recent weeks to make a bid for the Italian international, but Spurs are now looking to beat them to the defender’ signature.

Rugani has been replaced in the starting eleven by Mehdi Benatia in recent weeks, and is not fully trusted by manager Max Allegri as the club seek a satisfactory partner for captain Giorgio Chiellini.

There has been talk of Juve signing another centre half to strengthen their defensive options further in the January transfer window, and this would move the Italian further down the pecking order.

The Serie A club are reportedly looking for offers in the region of €40m (£35.6m) for Rugani, and while the Gunners are still said to be keen on the defender, it seems Tottenham are preparing to make the first move for the player.
