Arsenal have enquired about Manchester United centre back Chris Smalling, according to the Gambling Times journalist Graeme Bailey.

The 28 year old has played 27 times in all competitions for United this season so it is unlikely that manager Jose Mourinho would consider letting the defender leave.

Still, it is believed that the Gunners enquired about Smalling when they held talks with the Manchester club over signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Arsenal are said to be considering a bid for a centre half during the transfer window with West Bromwich Albion’s Jonny Evans and Mainz’s Abdou Diallo also reportedly on the club’s radar.

Manager Arsene Wenger seems to be keen to strengthen his defensive options this month, and it looks like he is casting his net as wide as possible as he eyes up potential recruits.

The Mirror report that Evans and Diallo remain the club’s preferred choices, but it will be interesting to see whether they do follow up their interest in Smalling if moves for their primary targets don’t materialise.
